I rarely find myself heading to Ubud, but whenever I do, I’m always reminded that one day is never quite enough. Aside from its lush landscapes and slower pace, Ubud has a way of offering experiences that feel fresh and different from other Bali neighbourhoods – from wandering through art spaces and rice field trails to joining creative workshops, chasing hidden waterfalls, or simply finding a quiet corner surrounded by nature.

And then…the coffee shops! So many beautiful cafes to explore, so little time, and (sadly) only so much space in my stomach, haha. With earthy interiors, jungle views, and that unmistakable Ubud aesthetic that just hits different, every coffee stop feels like a little experience of its own – from the way sunlight filters through rattan lampshades to how your matcha latte somehow looks even better against a perfect terracotta backdrop. Here are a few of those aesthetic cafes in Ubud that are worth adding to your list.

Kopi Pangeran

Walking into Kopi Pangeran feels a little like stepping through an old royal gate from a bygone Javanese kingdom — the kind of charming, slightly hidden entrance that makes you curious about what’s inside. The vibe is warm, humble, and inviting. The outdoor area is a lovely spot to slow down, enjoy the surroundings, and just take your time. You might come here because it’s a pretty place (and yes, it’s very photogenic), but you’ll probably end up staying for the freshly brewed coffee and that cosy, laid-back feeling.

Cafe Lilu

From the outside, it has a relaxed bohemian look, and walking in almost feels like you’re visiting a friend’s house. The inside space is homely, with natural touches and a tatami seating area that makes you want to kick back and stay awhile. And since it’s located near the Monkey Forest, don’t be surprised if a cheeky monkey pops up at the window to see what’s on your plate, hehe.

Lazy Cats Cafe

This one is quite iconic, but it still deserves a spot on the list. Lazy Cats Cafe has that effortlessly cool Ubud charm – a rustic interior with high ceilings, unfinished walls, and mismatched sofas that come together perfectly. The interior feels cosy, artistic, and a little bit quirky, like an old, slightly abandoned living room that’s somehow comfortable to spend a couple of hours in, slowly sipping on a long black with a small bite.

This is Bali

This place feels like stepping into a dreamy little doll house with its all-white interior and playful mezzanine seating. It’s not a big space, but it’s full of character. Everything feels thoughtfully designed, from the cosy layout to the little details that make the experience special. Even the glassware and plates they use add to the cute, whimsical atmosphere, making the whole place feel like a carefully curated little world.

Jinny’s Garden

Tucked away down one of the little alleys off Jalan Goutama, Jinny’s Garden is a cute semi-outdoor cafe surrounded by lush greenery, with warm, inviting lighting and a relaxed atmosphere. It may be small, but it’s cosy and there’s upstairs seating area as well. The menu offers plenty of Western dishes to choose from, though unfortunately there aren’t any desserts.

Sacra Stuja

If you’re after a place with that laid-back Ubud vibe, this is the spot. It feels calm from the outside, and once you step in, you’ll find a cosy bohemian space that almost feels like a giant tent, with plenty of natural touches and lush greenery adding to its charm. If you’ve got your furry friend with you, you’ll be happy to know it’s pet-friendly too.

Clear Cafe

You step inside, but then somehow find yourself in the “outdoors”, hehe. Clear Cafe’s open-air space is surrounded by lush greenery, with a peaceful fish pond creating the calming sound of flowing water. Filled with natural elements, warm textures, and plenty of plants, the whole place feels like a hidden garden escape where you can slow down and enjoy a quiet moment in Ubud.

Note to self: spend more time in Ubud. While the aesthetic spots are definitely worth exploring, there’s something special about being surrounded by this greener, slower side of Bali again. Ubud has grown and changed over the years, but somehow the feeling I remember from when I was little is still there – the calm energy, and that little bit of magic in the air. Hopefully, it stays this way for many years to come.

And just like my other restaurant lists, this one will keep growing. The Kata Bella troop will continue exploring, discovering, and finding more hidden gems to share with you along the way.

Pastries, Passion, and a Little Bit of Magic at Theo’s Wife Lois

I’ve got a pretty busy schedule and travel for work sometimes, but I refuse to be that person whose life is just work. So whenever I have to be out of town for a business trip, I make sure I squeeze in some me-time between meetings. I was recently in Bandung for a few days. I know Bandung has a cool coffee culture and is a fashion hub, but I only had a few hours to explore the city before my flight, so I had to be picky about where I went. In the end, I chose Theo’s Wife Lois. From what I gathered from their Instagram and menu, Theo and Lois are husband and wife who share a passion for adventures, art, and, of course, food - Theo in the hot kitchen and Lois in desserts. I somehow imagined them as Wes Anderson characters. Together, they created this charming restaurant. You can instantly sense their fun and quirky personalities the moment you step inside. I arrived quite early around 8am, and unlike in Bali, where breakfast spots are packed by 7am, the place was still empty. Or maybe I just got lucky? Because apparently, this place gets really busy. If I'm not mistaken, you are only allowed to stay for a maximum of 2 hours (but I didn't need that much to finish my breakfast so it was no biggie). Naturally, the first thing I did was explore the middle island, where all the cakes and pastries are displayed - sweet tooth represent! Since it felt like a bit of a holiday, I decided to indulge in a matcha scone and a Mochilembu - a Cilembu sweet potato flavoured bomboloni with clotted cream and a surprise mochi inside. Yum yum! Both were absolutely delicious, with just the right amount of sweetness. And let’s not forget the coffee - it was smooth and easy to drink. I think the pastry and cake varieties change every day or every other day. But when I was there, they had bombolonis with various fillings; Lembang berries, apple, azuki - and donuts with fun toppings like vanilla yuzu, peanut butter and jelly, cookie crumble, and pistachio. There was also a selection of financiers and pretzels, ranging from original and chocolate to almond nougatine. And if you're feeling a little naughty, they even had cheesecake and cookies - we make the rules when we're adults, so we are allowed to have them for breakfast right? Hehe. I didn’t see until I needed to go to the toilet that they have more seating at the back - oh, and a proper dining menu too, which looks amazing! Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to try it this time… but next time for sure! Being there, I realised that when something is made with so much love and passion, it shows in all the little details; the sweet creations, the interior, the colour palette, the witty quotes, the bright pink takeaway boxes, the sticker sets, and even the little mementos they’ve collected during their travels. I honestly feel like I could be good friends with Theo and Lois! Hahaha - if you two are reading this, hellooo! ;) If you’re ever in Bandung, this place should definitely be on your must-visit list. Whether you’re after a quiet morning treat or a full dining experience, Theo’s Wife Lois is a gem that truly reflects the love and creativity behind it. Can’t wait to go back and try more! Where to buy salt bread in Bali We’re not exactly sure when salt bread went from just another bread to the bread everyone suddenly couldn’t stop talking about, but here we are - Bali is officially in its salt bread era, and we totally get it. If you haven’t tried one yet, salt bread - also known as shio pan is basically a soft, fluffy, light bread with a buttery centre, a beautifully crisp outer layer and bottom, and, traditionally, a sprinkle of salt on top. Simple, but we must admid that once you’ve had a really good one, it’s hard to look at regular bread the same way again. Even croissants are starting to feel a little...yesterday (désolé!). Bali’s bakers have been getting creative with filings like pistachio, ham and cheese, and ube, though the plain one is already so good. Coffee Shops in Denpasar What’s in Denpasar? Well...a lot, actually. Don’t just stick to one area when you’re on holiday in Bali. In case you didn’t know, Denpasar is the capital and largest city of Bali, as well as the island’s central hub for government, commerce, and everyday life. Beyond the busy city centre, you’ll find huge residential areas, local neighbourhoods, traditional markets, and plenty of places where everyday Balinese life carries on. And one of the things I love about checking out cafes and coffee shops here is the regular local prices. No viral cafe mark-up, just good coffee at prices that actually feel pretty reasonable. So, if you’re up for exploring Denpasar, here are a few coffee spots worth checking out, picked by the Kata Bella team and friends. The menu is a mix of Indonesian comfort snacks like tahu bakso (stuffed tofu) and pisang goreng (banana fritters), along with various pastries and banana bread. Hehe. It’s a nice and quiet space where you can chill, or get some work done for hours. Their must-tries on the menu are their dirty latte, which has a hint of blueberry cheesecake, and the matcha strawberry. It’s a Japanese-inspired specialty coffee house and fusion restaurant, so you’ll find a good mix of Japanese dishes and, of course, good coffee. The whole place is decked out in Japanese-inspired details, from the exterior to the moment you step inside, even extending to the outdoor space. They have out-of-the-box coffee creations, like guava, strawberry, yuzu, and...seaweed coffee? Who would’ve thought! They do all the classics too, so you can still grab a good latte or Americano, but while you’re here, why not be a little adventurous, right? Or, you can take home one of their bottled coffees, with flavours like rose, red ginger, and pineapple. They now have several branches across Jakarta, and another one in Denpasar. 📍Google Map: Second Floor Coffee Patimura Image credit: Second Floor Coffee Instagram Seniman Coffee It’s one of Bali’s well-known coffee roasters, and there’s a reason why they remain popular among locals and travellers. I think a big part of the appeal is that the coffee is consistently good. They have a great selection of beans from different parts of Indonesia, including plenty of varieties from Bali, so if you’re into coffee, there’s always something good to try here. The space in Denpasar is pretty artsy too - well, Seniman means “artist” after all. Take a little detour from the usual Bali itinerary - you might just find a different side of the island worth coming back for.
