I rarely find myself heading to Ubud, but whenever I do, I’m always reminded that one day is never quite enough. Beyond its lush landscapes and slower pace, Ubud has a way of offering experiences that feel fresh and different from other Bali neighbourhoods – from wandering through art spaces and rice field trails to joining creative workshops, chasing hidden waterfalls, or simply finding a quiet corner surrounded by nature.

And then…the coffee shops! So many beautiful cafes to explore, so little time, and (sadly) only so much space in my stomach, haha. With earthy interiors, jungle views, and that unmistakable Ubud aesthetic that just hits different, every coffee stop feels like a little experience of its own – from the way sunlight filters through rattan lampshades to how your matcha latte somehow looks even better against a perfect terracotta backdrop. Kopi Pangeran

Walking into Kopi Pangeran feels a little like stepping through an old royal gate from a bygone Javanese kingdom — the kind of charming, slightly hidden entrance that makes you curious about what’s inside. The vibe is warm, humble, and inviting, with no rush to be anywhere else. The outdoor area is a lovely spot to slow down, enjoy the surroundings, and just take your time. You might come here because it’s a pretty place (and yes, it’s very photogenic), but you’ll probably end up staying for the freshly brewed coffee and that cosy, laid-back feeling that makes you want to linger a little longer.

Cafe Lilu

From the outside, it has a relaxed bohemian look, and walking in almost feels like you’re visiting a friend’s house. The inside space is cosy and homely, with natural touches and a tatami seating area that makes you want to kick back and stay awhile. And since it’s located near the Monkey Forest, don’t be surprised if a cheeky monkey pops up at the window to see what’s on your plate, hehe.

Lazy Cats Cafe

This one is quite iconic, but it still deserves a spot on the list. Lazy Cats Cafe has that effortlessly cool Ubud charm – a rustic interior with high ceilings, unfinished walls, and mismatched sofas that come together perfectly. The interior feels cosy, artistic, and a little bit quirky, like an old, slightly abandoned living room that’s somehow comfortable to spend a couple of hours in, slowly sipping on a long black with a small bite.

This place feels like stepping into a dreamy little doll house with its all-white interior and playful mezzanine seating. It’s not a big space, but it’s full of character. Everything feels thoughtfully designed, from the cosy layout to the little details that make the experience special. Even the glassware and plates they use add to the cute, whimsical atmosphere, making the whole place feel like a carefully curated little world.

If you’re after a place with that laid-back Ubud vibe, this is the spot. It feels calm from the outside, and once you step in, you’ll find a cosy bohemian space that almost feels like a giant tent, with plenty of natural touches and lush greenery adding to its charm. Clear Cafe

You step inside, but then somehow find yourself in the “outdoors”, hehe. Clear Cafe’s open-air space is surrounded by lush greenery, with a peaceful fish pond creating the calming sound of flowing water. Filled with natural elements, warm textures, and plenty of plants, the whole place feels like a hidden garden escape where you can slow down and enjoy a quiet moment in Ubud.

Note to self: spend more time in Ubud. While the aesthetic spots are definitely worth exploring, there’s something special about being surrounded by this greener, slower side of Bali again. Ubud has grown and changed over the years, but somehow the feeling I remember from when I was little is still there – the calm energy, and that little bit of magic in the air. Hopefully, it stays this way for many years to come.

And just like my other restaurant lists, this one will keep growing. The Kata Bella troop will continue exploring, discovering, and finding more hidden gems to share with you along the way.

A lineup that sounds “simple”, like potato bread with butter to start, steak tartare polenta, and roasted chicken with Japanese rice delivers far more depth than you’d expect. Finish strong with their cocktails. I went for their Tea & Citrus - a perfect mix of dry gin and earl grey tea, yum! You can sit by the open kitchen and watch the magic happen, settle into the comfy dining area, or head outside for the sea breeze and the sound of the waves. I’m not usually a big fan of red meat, but with something as good as their steak… yes, puh-lease. I still have core memories of me and my cousin wandering the streets of Legian, going to the beach and getting our hair braided, shopping at Surfer Girl, when days felt unhurried and things were simpler. The neighbourhood has changed so much since then, as places naturally do. Still, there are pockets of Legian that feel reassuringly timeless. Some hotels have remained local favourites since the 90s, like Bali Mandira, holding onto their charm while growing alongside the area. Goolali Gelato Bar & Pâtisserie: Semarang’s Sweetest Escape

Travelling around Java, especially Central Java is becoming more popular, thanks to new the toll road from Jakarta that makes the drive possible in just five to eight hours. While Yogyakarta has always been a tourist favourite, Semarang is starting to steal the spotlight. Some visit for its iconic landmarks like Kota Lama and the historic Lawang Sewu, while others are all about the street food. But did you know Semarang’s cafe, restaurant and bar scene is also flourishing? I won’t go into all the great spots in this article, but I have to share a little gem that stole my heart and keeps me coming back every time I’m in town; Goolali Gelato Bar & Pâtisserie. They also serve beautifully crafted mini gâteaux with unique flavours, macarons, bonbons, and oh! I have to rave about the pastries! Their croissants and danishes are out of this world, especially when they’re fresh from the oven (you have to show up early in the morning for this, but it’s totally worth it!). Another highlight of visiting Goolali is their afternoon tea. Instead of the usual tiered setup, they’ve gone for a whimsical-magical-fantastical style that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale.
