Foci Bakery

I’m a fan of focaccia bread because it’s light, but paired with a good filling, it’s satisfying. That’s exactly why I like Foci Bakery – it’s perfect for a quick lunch. Even something as simple as their focaccia with pesto hits the spot, but if you’re after something more filling, they also do something like the Thicc Breakfast Sandwich, packed with pork belly pastrami and egg. Yum!

Kalos

Its spacious open-air setting and garden surroundings create a peaceful atmosphere where time seems to move a little slower. Enjoy a quiet coffee, take your time with a freshly baked croissant, or settle in for a few hours of work. The menu follows the same balance, offering nourishing salads alongside international menu and comfort meals like pasta and pizza.

Seta Coffee

A beautifully designed space that feels both stylish and familiar. The cosy interior blends modern cafe design with Indonesian touches, from wooden pillars and Javanese patterned tiles to woven details and batik accents. There’s a warmth to the space that feels like stepping into an Indonesian home. Beyond coffee, their menu also offers a range of international dishes.

Baker Butcher Barista

True to its name, Baker Butcher Barista brings together three things they do best: baked goods, hearty dishes, and coffee creations. Their menu is filled with interesting choices, from pastries like the cempedak croissant (a tropical jackfruit-like fruit native to Southeast Asia) to playful drinks like the Teh Botol Latte and Onde-Onde (glutinous rice ball filled with mung bean paste and coated with sesame seeds). The space itself is equally inviting – comfortable, and well-designed for everything from a quick coffee stop to a relaxed meal.

Seniman Coffee

Some places never go out of style, and Seniman Coffee is one of them. It’s almost an unspoken rule that if you’re in Ubud, you have to stop by at least once. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, it always feels good to come back. After all these years, it’s still one of Ubud’s true coffee legends.

Breakfast spots in Canggu I’m not a morning person, but I will wake up early for a warm cup of piccolo, croissants, a nice plate of eggs, bacon, baked beans, and toast that I don’t have to cook myself. Canggu really feels like it’s made for early birds though - everywhere you look in the morning, breakfast spots are always packed; from healthy to hearty, to the occasional naughty breakfast, hehe. But sometimes having too many options makes it hard to decide where to eat. So here, I’ve picked a few of my favourites for you to try - maybe one each day if you haven’t already, depending on what you’re craving. I always order the same thing (I know, I know!): the Honky Tonk - homemade hash browns with poached eggs, smashed avo, bacon, and salsa. That said, I’ve tried other things on the menu every now and then, and they’re mostly good.  Canteen, if you’re reading this, please never remove the Honky Tonk from the menu or I’ll cry, kthxbye. 💰 Price range: IDR 60K-150K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 7am-4.30pm 📍 Address: Jl. Everything is beautifully plated, but then you take a bite and realise it actually delivers. Not just pretty for Instagram, but genuinely good. Think colourful smoothie bowls, or rolled pancakes, combined with good coffee, it’s your everyday comfort breakfast but a little extra special.  Ps. Thank you so much, Island Bagels, for keeping the Hangover Wrap on the menu for what feels like forever, because it’s still my favourite. You definitely don’t need to be hungover to enjoy this naughty little breakfast; beef patty, bacon, melted cheddar, and chilli mayo all wrapped up in one delicious bite. I’m sure their bagels are amazing too, so you should definitely give those a try, hehe. Ps. I want to share a breakfast spot where you can build your own breakfast, so you don’t have to stress the wait staff with requests like: “Can I have only avocado slices, two eggs sunny side up (medium well, please), with bacon..but without this and that?” *guilty. Here, you can totally be that person - and if customising your own plate isn’t your thing, they also have a regular a la carte menu with plenty of classic options to choose from.💰 Price range: IDR 100K-250K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 8.30am-5pm📍 Address: Jl. Do come early, as pastries can sell out pretty quickly. Once or twice, I did order their breakfast menu as well, which they have alongside freshly baked pastries every day. But I usually go to Butterman for their croissants which they claim are “hotter than your man”…But I’m not quite sure how to tell them they’re wrong though, because I’m secretly married to Ryan Gosling.  💰 Price range: 50K-150K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 6.30am-6pm 📍 Address: Jl. Getting their pain au chocolat can be quite a mission - if you want to beat the crowd, you’ve got to show up super early. I’ve only ever ordered their pastries to go and eaten them at home, hiding from the world. They’re pretty good, and huge! Oh, also, they have a dining area now too, so maybe next time I'll stay and have a big breakfast there. 💰 Price range: 50K-100K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 6am-10pm 📍 Address: Jl. Rules of society don’t exist on weekends…in Bali. You want cheesecake for breakfast? They have all the classic all-time favourites like butter croissants, plus must-tries like Louie’s eggs benedict and croque madame. Little joys like that fix everything a slow morning is supposed to. Also, half the joy here is not having to think too hard about where to go next… just follow the cravings, show up a little hungry, and let Bali do its thing. Vegan Cafes in Canggu I’m not vegan, but when I really think about it, the Indonesian diet is actually heavily plant-based. I grew up eating tempe, tofu, steamed mushrooms, stir-fried vegetables, and vegetable soups without ever thinking of them as “vegan food” - they were just normal everyday meals at home. Meat was often more of a side dish or something for special occasions, while vegetables, soy-based proteins, rice, and simple home cooking were the real foundation of the diet. In my family, at least. So now that I’m an adult with free will and access to basically any food I want, I still naturally enjoy vegetables every now and then. My parents eat almost entirely plant-based these days too, so I guess I still follow that rhythm - and living in Canggu definitely makes it easy, because vegan options are everywhere. Here’s a mix of places I’ve personally tried myself, plus a few recommendations from my friends too. Alongside local dishes, they also serve Western meals and smoothie bowls too, so you still have plenty of options. Ps. “Dua Hati” means “two hearts,” so I’m guessing that’s why the rice is heart-shaped, hehe. 📍 Jl. Oma Jamu has a warung-style display with ready-made dishes, which is perfect if you arrive starving and want to eat straight away. And from the name “Oma Jamu,” you can expect that they also have a great selection of homemade jamu (Indonesian traditional herbal drinks). 📍 Jl. But really, other than the vegan-labelled cafés, it’s super easy to find plant-based options everywhere in Canggu (and in Indonesia). The Cave Bali: A One-of-a-Kind Dining Experience

The Cave Bali had been on my dining list for quite some time. I’ve lived in Bali long enough that anything more than 10 minutes from home now feels far. And just like that, I rarely go anywhere. But every now and then, my best friend and I like to dress up and reward ourselves with a nice dinner. So we finally decided to try this seven-course lunch by Chef Ryan Clift - a unique dining experience set literally inside a cave, part of The Edge Bali resort. We live in Canggu, while the restaurant is in Pecatu, supposedly about an hour’s drive away. Wrong! In reality, it took us almost three hours - though to be fair, it was during Bali’s wet season… and also the famously unpredictable Uluwatu traffic. Was it worth it? Here’s my experience. Sitting on the famous Uluwatu's majestic cliff, getting there takes a little commitment. After our interestingly long car journey, we were rewarded with a beautiful setting and a warm welcome from the friendly staff, who took us to The Cave by buggy - that’s how big the property is. At first, the restaurant entrance looked quite normal, but the moment we stepped inside, it felt like entering a whole new world. A staircase led down into a subterranean cave complete with stalactites and all! I had seen this place in magazines and on social media, but experiencing it in real life just hit different. It was slightly chilly inside (glad I brought a cardigan), and the lighting was perfect: dim and atmospheric, yet still bright enough to read the menu and see things lol. A quick tip: reservations are essential, and arriving on time is important. Lunch and dinner begin at fixed times due to limited seating, the structured menu, and the intermission shows. Luckily, we anticipated the long journey, so we made it just in time. The interior, viewed from the stairs - only 22 seats available. Delightful Bites, One After Another We had booked the seven-course meal, so all we had to do was sit back and wait for each dish to arrive one by one. I actually love this style of dining - I tend to eat small portions but frequently, so the pacing allowed enough time to digest before the next course arrived. During the 15-minute intermissions between courses, a video-mapping projection played across the cave ceiling. It felt magical and added another layer to the whole experience. Our foodventure began with a delightful spread of Parmesan Beignet, Smoked Gindara Tartlet (my personal favourite - more please!), Mussel Tempura, and Tomato Jelly. Next came the Scallop Ajo Blanco (also amazing!) and Foie Gras Cheesecake - ok, this is a combination I wasn’t really sure about (sorry!). After another intermission, we were served Toothfish à la Viennoise. By this point, I was already quite full, but I couldn’t skip the next dish: Wagyu Pot-au-Feu, which turned out to be the absolute star of the day! But before that, another intermission gave us time to explore the cave (which you can actually do!). Helmets and torches are provided for safety because, well, it is a real natural cave after all - better safe than sorry. And then came dessert: hello, Olive Oil Sorbet and Lemon Tart! The perfect sweet ending and absolutely delicious. Do note that the menu changes every four months, so your experience may be completely different from mine. Dining at The Cave is more than just a meal; it’s an experience that blends nature, and fine dining in a way that feels both intimate and theatrical. Yes, the journey there may require patience, but once you step inside, time seems to slow down. It’s the kind of experience that reminds you why it’s worth leaving your comfort zone every now and then - especially when good food, a magical setting, and great company are waiting.
