I’m not a morning person, but I will wake up early for a warm cup of piccolo, croissants, a nice plate of eggs, bacon, baked beans, and toast that I don’t have to cook myself.

Canggu really feels like it’s made for early birds though – everywhere you look in the morning, breakfast spots are always packed; from healthy to hearty, to the occasional naughty breakfast, hehe. But sometimes having too many options makes it hard to decide where to eat. So here, I’ve picked a few of my favourites for you to try – maybe one each day if you haven’t already, depending on what you’re craving.

Canteen Cafe

I’ve been going to Canteen for years and basically take everyone here; friends, parents, dates, tourists, because this place is pretty laid-back and not as pricey as most breakfast spots in Canggu. I always order the same thing (I know, I know!): the Honky Tonk – homemade hash browns with poached eggs, smashed avo, bacon, and salsa. That said, I’ve tried other things on the menu every now and then, and they’re mostly good.

Canteen, if you’re reading this, please never remove the Honky Tonk from the menu or I’ll cry, kthxbye.

Rise and Shine

It’s a breakfast spot that makes you go “aww” the second your food arrives. Everything is beautifully plated, but then you take a bite and realise it actually delivers. Not just pretty for Instagram, but genuinely good. Think colourful smoothie bowls, or rolled pancakes, combined with good coffee, it’s your everyday comfort breakfast but a little extra special.

Ps. There’s also another Rise and Shine in Umalas Bumbak if you happen to be around the area.

Island Bagels

Despite the name making it pretty obvious that they sell bagels, the one thing I always order from them is…their breakfast wrap, lol! Thank you so much, Island Bagels, for keeping the Hangover Wrap on the menu for what feels like forever, because it’s still my favourite. You definitely don’t need to be hungover to enjoy this naughty little breakfast; beef patty, bacon, melted cheddar, and chilli mayo all wrapped up in one delicious bite. I’m sure their bagels are amazing too, so you should definitely give those a try, hehe.

Ps. There are two Island Bagels’ locations, one in Berawa and one in Pererenan.

Gather

Gather around, picky eaters! *pun intended. I want to share a breakfast spot where you can build your own breakfast, so you don’t have to stress the wait staff with requests like: “Can I have only avocado slices, two eggs sunny side up (medium well, please), with bacon..but without this and that?” *guilty. Here, you can totally be that person – and if customising your own plate isn’t your thing, they also have a regular a la carte menu with plenty of classic options to choose from.

Fold

Good pastries, good coffee, plus aircon in Bali’s heat while most Canggu cafes are open-air – and that, kids, is how Fold wins every time. Do come early, as pastries can sell out pretty quickly. They also have cakes and proper cooked breakfast if you’re in the mood for eggs benny and all that, but I go to Fold mainly for the croissants (and sometimes donuts hehehe).

Butterman

I used to live walking distance from Butterman, and there was a time when my diet consisted of maybe 80% almond croissants – it’s hard not to.

Once or twice, I did order their breakfast menu as well, which they have alongside freshly baked pastries every day. But I usually go to Butterman for their croissants which they claim are “hotter than your man”…But I’m not quite sure how to tell them they’re wrong though, because I’m secretly married to Ryan Gosling.

Gigi Susu

I still have no clue why so many people line up to take photos in front of Gigi Susu’s tiny booth, but I do know why they do it for the croissants, hehe.

Getting their pain au chocolat can be quite a mission – if you want to beat the crowd, you’ve got to show up super early. I’ve only ever ordered their pastries to go and eaten them at home, hiding from the world. They’re pretty good, and huge! Oh, also, they have a dining area now too, so maybe next time I’ll stay and have a big breakfast there.

Milk and Madu

This place has been around in Canggu for quite some time and now has branches in other locations too, and it’s still top of mind for a lazy weekend brunch, whether with friends or solo.

They’ve got all the usual comfort breakfast and brunch classics like eggs benny and the rest, but I cannot not order their salted caramel cheesecake every time. Rules of society don’t exist on weekends…in Bali. You want cheesecake for breakfast? You have cheesecake for breakfast.

Little Frenchie

It’s a cute little restaurant in Pererenan and it’s close to my gym, so it has become a bit of a comfort ritual after training. They have all the classic all-time favourites like butter croissants, plus must-tries like Louie’s eggs benedict and croque madame. Simple and indulgent – the kind of slow morning vibe I love.

Canggu can be crazy, but it has all the things I’ve come to consider basic needs, like good croissants, healthy breakfasts, and quick, easy spots nearby that open super early. Little joys like that fix everything a slow morning is supposed to.

Also, half the joy here is not having to think too hard about where to go next… just follow the cravings, show up a little hungry, and let Bali do its thing. And if you end up ordering cheesecake for breakfast or queuing for pastries at 6AM, I fully support your life choices.

My go-to place is Bu Toha. Best Coffee Shops in Canggu, Umalas, and Nearby Areas I’m not a coffee connoisseur, just a regular girl who needs her daily caffeine fix to survive the chaos of life. So don’t expect a deep dive into brewing methods, tasting notes, or where the beans are grown here. Instead, I’m simply sharing my go-to coffee spots near where I live in Bali, mostly Canggu, Umalas and the surrounding areas. This is also not a list of "The Most Instagrammable cafes" (though they are pretty cute); some are small, humble, and just….nice. So, if you're looking for great coffee without the fluff - let’s get into it. Simple, unpretentious, and focused on their coffee - they serve proper artisan coffee with a nice selection to choose from. It’s roughly the same distance from where I live to either one. The space is nice for a quiet hangout with friends or a quick work-from-cafe session. If you get hungry in the middle of replying emails, they’ve got a tempting selection of pastries for cakes, plus a main menu if you’re ready for something more filling. Ps. And unlike the old days, parking is no longer a challenge - there's a whole basement parking area for both scooters and cars. You really can't skip this one when you're in Bali. The space is big, stylish, and easy to spend a few hours in. And after all these years, Revolver is still one of my favourite places to go for a good coffee fix. 📍Jl. That’s exactly why I like it; I’m not a fan of crowded cafes, especially when you have to wait in line. The coffee here is nice, and they’re known for their healthy menu (but not too hardcore healthy, if you know what I mean). 📍 Jl. Bumbak Dauh No.89x, Kerobokan, Kec. Arnold’s Coffee may be small, but it’s full of charm, and it has everything you need to start your morning right. My family loves this place; we often end up staying a while, especially with the board games they have available. The coffee is nice, and you should definitely try the waffles. Best of all, the prices are affordable (I mean, things are generally cheaper once you’re outside central Canggu). 📍 Jl. Raya Semer no. 34, Kerobokan, Kec. Not far from 7AM Bakers in Bumbak, you'll find a small entrance tucked away on the corner that leads to TGC. It's easy to miss, but definitely worth seeking out. I like sitting outside, but the upstairs space looks like it'd be perfect for a work-from-cafe day. 📍 Jl. Bumbak Dauh, Kerobokan, Kec.
