Sazón Bali : Spanish flavours in Canggu Image

Spanish Restaurant in Canggu

Bali is such a melting pot of cultures, and as a food lover, I feel like the dining options here are endless. I love Indonesian and Balinese food, of course – but I also enjoy trying dishes from other countries. One of the things I really appreciate about living in Bali is that I can explore so many different cuisines without having to travel far.

Not long ago, a friend of mine from Regent Bali Canggu invited me to the grand opening of one of their new restaurants, Sazón. They gave us a little sneak peek of what’s on the menu during the party, and it made me want to come back for more. And I did! I went back to Sazon, and here’s a little story about my evening filled with delicious Spanish food and good company.

I rarely eat Spanish food and, I gotta be honest, I didn’t know much beyond the famous paella. But Chef Javier passionately walked us through each dish as he served our dinner, from starters to dessert – and I soaked it all up like story time on a plate. I enjoyed every bite. Here’s what we had.

Gilda

“Look it up on Google,” Chef Javier said. Turns out Gilda is a 1946 black-and-white romance film starring Rita Hayworth. So, why was the Gilda on my plate marinated tuna with olives and peppers? hehe. Well, Gilda is a classic Spanish tapa named after the film because, just like the movie, it’s bold, salty, and full of spicy flavour. It was a lovely intro to the courses that followed.

Pa Amb Tomàquet

As simple as it looks, and as basic as it sounds on the menu; bread, tomato, ham – this dish tasted like so much more than just those three elements. I’m not exactly sure where all the flavour came from, but wow, my taste buds and tummy did a little happy dance. The ham isn’t your average ham, it’s Jamón Ibérico, a premium cured pork from Spain. I could’ve easily eaten a whole plate of it, but there was more food on the way, and I had to save some room in my tiny stomach.

Croquetas

The name pretty much says it all. We have an Indonesian version called kroket – pronounced the same. We tried the one filled with mushrooms, and it was deliciosa!

Japanese Scallop, Ajoblanco

Just when I thought it was time for the main course, another round of sharing bites arrived. At this point, I started to regret my fitted outfit choice! Haha, I probably left Sazón looking three months pregnant (with food baby, of course). Okay, back to the dish – I’m a big seafood fan, especially scallops, and everything in this one worked perfectly together: dill, cucumber, almonds.

Patatas Bravas

Potatoes – but make it fancy, with aioli and spicy tomato. I’ve always loved potatoes in any form, but I didn’t know there was another kind to love… until this.

Ibérico Grilled Pork & Mushroom Paella

And here it is – the main event and the highlight of my evening: the paella. Rich, comforting, and full of flavour, this dish perfectly combines tender Ibérico grilled pork with earthy mushrooms. Even though it’s not something I eat often, it tasted very comforting and somehow familiar.

Santiago Cake, Orange Curd & Toasted Meringue

I’m a dessert person, and I believe there’s always room for dessert—but we were heading into a serious food coma, so we decided to share the Santiago cake, a Spanish almond cake. It’s flourless and moist with a sponge-like texture—not too sweet, with a lovely hint of citrus from the orange curd.

All in all, Sazón is a great addition to Canggu’s buzzing dining scene. Whether you’re into Spanish food or just here for a tasty night out like me, they serve up good vibes and even better dishes. Their tagline, “más amor, por favor” (more love, please), totally fits – you can tell everything’s made with a lot of love. Can’t wait to go back and try even more from the menu. Gracias, Sazón!

Where to Eat Indonesian Food in Bali: My Current Favourites

Where to eat Indonesian food in Bali. I enjoy all kinds of international cuisine, but being born Indonesian, I’ll always find myself coming back to Indonesian food for comfort, no matter where I am. There’s something grounding about it; the rich flavours, the familiarity, and the way it just feels like home in a way nothing else quite does. Here, I’ve put together a list of places I usually go to for my everyday Indonesian meals in Bali - nothing too fancy, but also not quite street food; somewhere in the middle where you can still get authentic, home-cooked-style flavours. I’ll be sharing more Indonesian-food related articles soon, including a babi guling list (suckling pig) and a selection of more elevated Indonesian dining experiences, but for now, here’s where to eat Indonesian food in Bali. You may also like this article: Bali on a Budget - Cheap Eats in Canggu for Under 100K Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak Warung Kolega Run by a lovely husband-and-wife team who are usually at the cashier, this local favourite is especially popular with nearby office workers during lunch. Like many traditional warungs, you'll find a display of pre-cooked dishes. While the menu features dishes from across Indonesia, most are prepared in the Javanese style - like their rendang (beef curry), it's sweeter rather than spicy. They also serve two of Indonesia's iconic soups: rawon (black beef soup), and soto ayam (chicken soup). Warung Kolega is perfect for when you're short on time but still want a proper home-style Indonesian meal. 📍 Location: Warung Kolega ⏰ Opening Hours: Mon-Sat, 9am-8pm Image credit: Warung Kolega Instagram Warung Liku With just around 20K, you can get something filling, delicious, and quite healthy too. Their signature dish is ayam betutu, a Balinese spiced chicken, served in the form of nasi campur; rice and a selection of side dishes. The chicken is very aromatic, with a subtle wood-fire smokiness, and so tender it easily falls off the bone. 📍 Location: Warung Liku Nakula ⏰ Opening Hours: Mon-Sun, 8am-3pm Image credit: Warung Liku's Instagram You may also like this article: Restaurants in Legian and Seminyak - Kata Bella's Picks 2026 Made's Warung They’re a true legend and an absolute must on this list, especially for those who have never been and are trying Indonesian food for the first time, before venturing into more local warungs and street food spots. I used to go often to the Kuta branch when I was little, and now I usually visit the Seminyak one. I still order the same favourite: half nasi goreng, half gado-gado (fried rice and Indonesian salad with peanut dressing) - simple, comforting, and always satisfying. 📍 Location: Made's Warung Seminyak ⏰ Opening Hours: Mon-Sun, 10am-11.30pm Image credit: Made's Warung Instagram Waroeng Bernadette It's a great choice when you want a more refined Indonesian dining experience; the space is comfortable, the food presentation is nice, but the flavours stay authentic. The highlights for me are the beef rendang, the comforting sop buntut iga (beef rib soup), the classic sate ayam (chicken satay), and a warm bowl of bakso kuah (beef meatball soup) - all familiar dishes, done really well. 📍 Location: Waroeng Bernadette Seminyak ⏰ Opening Hours: Mon-Sun, 11am-10pm Image credit: Waroeng Bernadette Instagram Canggu, Umalas, and Kerobokan RM. Aryani Their speciality is fish dishes, served either deep-fried or in sweet and sour soup. There are also side dishes like stir-fried bean sprouts, baby squid, prawns, my all-time favourite, otak-otak (fish cake) and many different types of sambal (chili paste). The restaurant itself has the kind of charm you’d find in Bali restaurants back in the 90s - nostalgic, and full of character. It’s best to visit RM Aryani in a group so you can order a variety of dishes and try a little bit of everything together. 📍 Location: RM. Aryani ⏰ Opening Hours: Mon-Sun, 10am-10pm Image credit: RM. Aryani Instagram Dapoer Asia If you’re a traveller trying Indonesian food for the first time, this is a great place to start. The flavours are authentic enough for locals to enjoy, but not too heavy on herbs and spices, making it really approachable for first-timers - it’s good value too for a nice restaurant, not overpriced. They serve all the comforting dishes you’d expect from a home-cooked Indonesian meal, from nasi liwet (fragrant rice), soto ayam (Indonesian chicken soup), and sayur asem (sour soup) to sate ayam (chicken satay) and bakwan jagung (corn fritters). Make sure to save some room for their dessert drinks like es cincau (grass jelly drink) and es campur (mixed shaved ice). 📍 Location: Dapoer Asia ⏰ Opening Hours: Mon-Sun, 10am-9.30pm Image credit: Dapoer Asia Instagram You may also like this article: My Little Canggu Restaurant List - Part 1 Ayam Kampung & Rawon Bu Ros I like to think that in Java, if a restaurant has a photo of the owner on the sign, it’s usually good - because most of the time, it really is! Haha. Their signature dish is rawon, a rich beef soup with a deep black broth originated from East Java, but their soto ayam and fried chicken are just as good and really comforting after a long day. It’s a very local spot, but I’ve started seeing more foreigners trying rawon there lately and actually enjoying it, which is really nice to see. Rawon is life! 📍 Location: Ayam Kampung & Rawon Bu Ros ⏰ Opening Hours: Mon-Sun, 10am-10pm Image credit: Bu Ros Instagram Warung Sundari It’s a warung-style restaurant where the food is already pre-cooked, and you simply pick what you want from the display. There are so many options that, very often, I find it hard to choose. The menu rotates with Indonesian favourites, covering all kinds of proteins like fish, chicken, and beef, plus plenty of vegetables from beans and carrots to broccoli. They also mix it up with a few international dishes now and then, like chicken teriyaki or beef stew. 📍 Location: Warung Sundari ⏰ Opening Hours: Mon-Sat, 9am-7pm Image credit: Warung Sundari Google Page Hope this list helps you find a few comforting Indonesian food spots in Bali that you’ll keep coming back to, just like I do. SKAI Bar & Grill in Legian: Same Soul, Refined Experience Image

SKAI Bar & Grill in Legian: Same Soul, Refined Experience

The good old Legian never dies. I spent so much of my childhood in this neighbourhood that walking back through it now feels a bit like flipping through an old photo album; familiar corners, same vibe, and that nice feeling that not everything has changed. It’s comforting, in a way, to see some of the same restaurants still around - quietly standing the test of time.  And if you know, you know…some places, they evolve, but never lose their charm. Not trying too hard, not chasing trends - just naturally keeping up, staying relevant in their own way, while holding on to what made people fall in love with them in the first place. One of them is SKAI Bar & Grill, formerly known as SKAI Beach Club. And yes, as the name suggests, the concept’s had a bit of a glow-up. The heart of it never goes anywhereOpen Flame, Bold Flavours, and Signature Cuts You may also like this article: Bali Home Bakeries to Sweeten Your Celebrations The heart of it never goes anywhere Don’t worry though, the iconic beachfront pool and those outdoor seats we all love are still very much there (I know, some memories are just too good to let go of). It still carries that same laid-back, by-the-sea energy that made it such a favourite in the first place. But now, there’s a cosy indoor extension with 34 seats - perfect if you’re into that open-flame, grill-side kind of experience that SKAI Bar & Grill is leaning into. There’s also a new terrace that low-key feels like a secret garden - very much an evolution of the OG SKAI vibe. Think floor-to-ceiling windows, lush greenery everywhere, and laser-cut screens that look dreamy during golden hour (warm, dappled light kind of situation). The seating is all hand-woven in soft driftwood greys and sandy taupes, tying everything back to the natural beachy colour palette (my bright pink outfit would really pop here! hehe). So yeah, anyway - new space, same soul. The new seating area that feels warm and homely You may also like this article: Brunch in Bali - Rediscovering Legian through Farmer’s Daughter Open Flame, Bold Flavours, and Signature Cuts Now onto the food - because this is the even more interesting part. Picture all that calming seaside ambience paired with their heroes on the menu; tender cuts with za’atar, citrusy sumac, a touch of smoky paprika. Simple, but so good. Add in the sea breeze, some greenery, and soft lantern light overhead… it’s seaside dining, in Bali, but with a slice of Eastern Mediterranean twist. At the heart of it all is an open kitchen. You get to watch the chefs fully in their element, working the fire and charcoal. There’s something quite satisfying about seeing it all happen right in front of you. This is where SKAI’s signature cuts come in; Angus tenderloin, grass-fed MB3+, pork chop Pata Negra Ibérico, and more. And if you’re someone who likes to choose your cut properly, you’ll appreciate this: the dry-aging chamber is now on display too, beautifully laid out on rustic maple boards. Take your time, have a look, and pick exactly what you’re in the mood for. The kind of spread that feeds the soul All in all, SKAI Bar & Grill, and this new expansion, is such a lovely addition to Legian’s dining scene. It’s one of those spots that feels familiar, but in the best, refreshed kind of way - like coming back to something you love, but better than you remember. And the fact that it’s located at Padma Resort Legian, a resort that holds so many beautiful memories for me, just makes it even more special to me! 🫶🏻✨ SKAI BAR & GRILL🥩 Cuisine: Eastern Mediterranean💰 Price range: From 250K/ person⏰ Opening hour: Mon-Thu, 12pm-11pm/ Fri-Sat, 12pm-12am, Sun, 12.30pm-11pm📍Address: Jl. 10 Aesthetic Canggu Cafes and Restaurants Image

10 Aesthetic Canggu Cafes and Restaurants

Aesthetic Canggu Cafes and Restaurants I don’t pick a cafe or restaurant just because it’s cute - but I’ll admit, when a place has a nice interior and a comfortable space, I’m way more tempted to check it out. People these days call it “Instagrammable” (not really a word I love using), but for me it’s less about the photos and more about how genuinely happy I feel sitting in a space that looks and feels good. Canggu definitely has plenty of that aesthetic energy, but I’ve also made sure to pick spots that I actually enjoyed eating at - not just looking at. Anyway, if hunting down aesthetic Canggu cafes and restaurants is on your Bali itinerary, I hope this little list leads you to a few places you’ll like as much as I did. The whole place has this rustic, earthy vibe with natural materials and a cosy feel. The menu follows the same mindful approach, with Japanese-inspired dishes, healthy salads, as well as other comfort meals like cheeseburger and the classic eggs Benedict for breakfast. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 9am-8pm 📍 Google Map: Bokashi Berawa Image credit: Bokashi Instagram Arti Salad Bar With its unique cave-inspired design and a touch of greenery, this cafe feels like a hidden garden escape right on the main road. The space is beautifully designed while still being practical for those looking to work. The winning point is that there are plenty of power outlets at almost every table. Beyond the aesthetics, they also serve great coffee alongside fresh and nutritious meals from breakfast to dinner. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 7am-8pm 📍 Google Map: Arti Salad Bar Bread Basket The name pretty much gives it away - Bread Basket is where you go for freshly baked bread, sourdough, bagels, and coffee. But their breakfast menu is also worth checking out. Add in the warm interiors and cosy corners, and you have the perfect excuse to slow down and stay awhile. They also have branches in Sanur and Kerobokan. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 7am-5pm 📍 Google Map: Bread Basket Canggu Image credit: Bread Basket Canggu Google Page You may also like this article: My Little Canggu Restaurant List - Part 2 Woods Pererenan Walking into Woods Pererenan feels a little like a treehouse. The restaurant was designed around the existing trees, so you’ll see actual trees as part of the space. The highlight for me is their Sunday Roast, a weekly treat that invites you to spend your Sunday the way it should be: slow, unhurried, and with good food. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 8am-11pm 📍 Google Map: Woods Pererenan Image credit: Woods Pererenan Instagram Penny Lane This place is popular for a reason- giant archways, textured walls, vintage-inspired furniture, earthy tones, and sunlight hitting every corner perfectly during golden hour. It feels like a botanical wonderland - a place for gathering or special occasions. They also have quite an extensive menu, from classic breakfast dishes and burgers to steak and Indonesian favourites. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 8am-12am 📍 Google Map: Penny Lane Image credit: Penny Lane Instagram THE COLOURFUL ONES Studio Pepe This new addition to Canggu’s dining scene will lure you in with its super cute exterior - it almost doesn’t feel like you’re in Bali. But once you step inside, the vibe shifts completely. It’s a smart dining kind of place, serving a proper Italian menu from antipasti and pizza to pasta and, of course, dessert. The highlights for us were the chicken al mattone and linguine al limone. So yes, this place is not just pretty - the food is genuinely delicious too. ⏰ Opening hours: Tue-Sun, 11am-11pm 📍 Google Map: Studio Pepe Monsieur Spoon The Luc I still remember when Monsieur Spoon was just a little shop in Umalas, and I’d walk there from my aunt’s villa for chocolate tartlets and plain croissants. Now they’re everywhere - not just in Bali, but in big cities all over Indonesia too. Anyway, among all their branches, I find the one at The Luc Canggu especially cute and comfy. They also have a proper dining menu here, so it’s not just pastries and cakes. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 7am-10pm 📍 Google Map: Monsieur Spoon The Luc Image credit: Monsieur Spoon The Luc Google Page You may also like this article: Breakfast Spots in Canggu Worth Waking Up Early For Mara This one is a little further out, technically not in Canggu, but close enough and it's worth mentioning. And if you haven’t explored the Tumbak Bayuh area yet, now’s a good time. It’s much quieter than central Canggu, with plenty of hidden gems like this spot, Mara. It instantly catches your eye the moment you walk in, with bold colours and a fun, playful vibe. The menu isn’t too extensive, but it has everything you need for a good, easy lunch. There’s also a little corner with cute merchandise you can browse while you’re there. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sat, 7.30am-6.30pm 📍 Google Map: Mara Mata Warung, but make it cool. The space is huge and full of personality. You’ll be greeted by super cool murals that kind of set the whole vibe from the moment you walk in. There’s a little shop right at the entrance, a vinyl room tucked at the back, and a lush garden space that’s perfect for private events. Don’t expect traditional warung prices here, though - it’s more of a proper restaurant experience dressed in warung concept (they have a la carte menu too). Familiar flavours, but elevated in a way that’s still approachable and fun. ⏰ Opening hours: Sun-Thu 10am-10pm, Fri-Sat 10am-2am 📍 Google Map: Mata Berawa Image credit: Mata Berawa Instagram Brother Goose Sitting right next to The Garden Bali Kindy, it naturally carries that same playful, family-friendly energy - and of course you can expect a fun but nutritious kids’ menu here.
