Where to eat Indonesian food in Bali.

I enjoy all kinds of international cuisine, but being born Indonesian, I’ll always find myself coming back to Indonesian food for comfort, no matter where I am. There’s something grounding about it; the rich flavours, the familiarity, and the way it just feels like home in a way nothing else quite does. Here, I’ve put together a list of places I usually go to for my everyday Indonesian meals in Bali – nothing too fancy, but also not quite street food; somewhere in the middle where you can still get authentic, home-cooked-style flavours.

I’ll be sharing more Indonesian-food related articles soon, including a babi guling list (suckling pig) and a selection of more elevated Indonesian dining experiences, but for now, here’s where to eat Indonesian food in Bali.

Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak

Warung Kolega

Run by a lovely husband-and-wife team who are usually at the cashier, this local favourite is especially popular with nearby office workers during lunch. Like many traditional warungs, you’ll find a display of pre-cooked dishes. While the menu features dishes from across Indonesia, most are prepared in the Javanese style – like their rendang (beef curry), it’s sweeter rather than spicy. They also serve two of Indonesia’s iconic soups: rawon (black beef soup), and soto ayam (chicken soup). Warung Kolega is perfect for when you’re short on time but still want a proper home-style Indonesian meal.

Warung Liku

With just around 20K, you can get something filling, delicious, and quite healthy too. Their signature dish is ayam betutu, a Balinese spiced chicken, served in the form of nasi campur; rice and a selection of side dishes. The chicken is very aromatic, with a subtle wood-fire smokiness, and so tender it easily falls off the bone.

Made’s Warung

They’re a true legend and an absolute must on this list, especially for those who have never been and are trying Indonesian food for the first time, before venturing into more local warungs and street food spots. I used to go often to the Kuta branch when I was little, and now I usually visit the Seminyak one. I still order the same favourite: half nasi goreng, half gado-gado (fried rice and Indonesian salad with peanut dressing) – simple, comforting, and always satisfying.

Waroeng Bernadette

It’s a great choice when you want a more refined Indonesian dining experience; the space is comfortable, the food presentation is nice, but the flavours stay authentic. The highlights for me are the beef rendang, the comforting sop buntut iga (beef rib soup), the classic sate ayam (chicken satay), and a warm bowl of bakso kuah (beef meatball soup) – all familiar dishes, done really well.

Canggu, Umalas, and Kerobokan

RM. Aryani

Their speciality is fish dishes, served either deep-fried or in sweet and sour soup. There are also side dishes like stir-fried bean sprouts, baby squid, prawns, my all-time favourite, otak-otak (fish cake) and many different types of sambal (chili paste). The restaurant itself has the kind of charm you’d find in Bali restaurants back in the 90s – nostalgic, and full of character. It’s best to visit RM Aryani in a group so you can order a variety of dishes and try a little bit of everything together.

Dapoer Asia

If you’re a traveller trying Indonesian food for the first time, this is a great place to start. The flavours are authentic enough for locals to enjoy, but not too heavy on herbs and spices, making it really approachable for first-timers – it’s good value too for a nice restaurant, not overpriced. They serve all the comforting dishes you’d expect from a home-cooked Indonesian meal, from nasi liwet (fragrant rice), soto ayam (Indonesian chicken soup), and sayur asem (sour soup) to sate ayam (chicken satay) and bakwan jagung (corn fritters). Make sure to save some room for their dessert drinks like es cincau (grass jelly drink) and es campur (mixed shaved ice).

Ayam Kampung & Rawon Bu Ros

I like to think that in Java, if a restaurant has a photo of the owner on the sign, it’s usually good – because most of the time, it really is! Haha. Their signature dish is rawon, a rich beef soup with a deep black broth originated from East Java, but their soto ayam and fried chicken are just as good and really comforting after a long day. It’s a very local spot, but I’ve started seeing more foreigners trying rawon there lately and actually enjoying it, which is really nice to see. Rawon is life!

Warung Sundari

It’s a warung-style restaurant where the food is already pre-cooked, and you simply pick what you want from the display. There are so many options that, very often, I find it hard to choose. The menu rotates with Indonesian favourites, covering all kinds of proteins like fish, chicken, and beef, plus plenty of vegetables from beans and carrots to broccoli. They also mix it up with a few international dishes now and then, like chicken teriyaki or beef stew.

Restaurants in Legian and Seminyak: Kata Bella's Picks 2026

Restaurants in Legian and Seminyak. I know some of you might think these neighbourhoods aren’t as cool as they used to be. But for many families travelling with kids, they remain a top choice because of their proximity to the airport and the convenience they offer. You’ll find everything you need here - from great 5-star hotels and beaches to shops, supermarkets, medical centres, and, most importantly, plenty of places to eat. Legian and Seminyak are packed with fantastic restaurants, from breakfast spots to dinner favourites. I used to live around here, and on a recent visit, I spent some time exploring both old favourites and new openings to find the places that I’d happily recommend to my readers. So, here are some of the places that made the list. You may also like this article: Breakfast Spots in Canggu Worth Waking Up Early For Farmer's Daughter It's not ranked by favourites, but this new spot in Legian deserves to be at the top of the list. Not only is the place cute and cosy, but it also serves excellent pastries and coffee. If you're after a proper brunch or lunch, the menu has some interesting options like cauliflower steak and fried chicken waffles. For something quick to grab on your way to the beach - which is only a two-minute walk away, you can get one of their baguette sandwiches. And whatever you do, please save room for dessert! The pistachio kunafa mousse is a must-try, or come back just for the cakes because they're absolutely worth it. Mister Wasabi A newbie in Legian, Mister Wasabi is already making waves with its creative Japanese menu with a luxe twist, featuring dishes like Japanese fried rice with Wagyu Simo striploin, foie gras and caviar, plus a must-try chirashizushi. Upstairs, you’ll find a modern Japanese restaurant with an open kitchen for a more elevated dining experience, while downstairs is a lively izakaya for sharing plates, fun cocktails, and a more relaxed night out. Makan Place This place is best known for its pork knuckle, which they say is enough for two. But I won't judge if you decide to take that as a personal challenge. Makan Place is my go-to pit stop whenever I'm running errands around Legian because the menu covers pretty much every craving. You can have some "sneaky holiday food" like a Korean fried chicken burger or chicken parmy, or opt for something a little lighter like my favourite Asian chicken salad or the pan-seared salmon. And if you've never tried Indonesian or Balinese food before, this is also a great place for your first taste. I'd recommend starting with the beef rendang or the fried duck - both are solid introductions to local flavours. The restaurant is spacious, with plenty of parking for both cars and scooters (important for Legian!), plus a dedicated playground area to keep the little ones entertained. Their signature dish is Miya's charcoal chicken, served with your choice of sauce ranging from mild and medium to spicy or sambal matah, and you can have it with sides like sweet corn and coleslaw. Another standout is the peri-peri chicken pizza, which is well worth ordering for the table. And then of course, dessert! Try their sticky toffee pudding with miso toffee sauce, almond streusel, and vanilla gelato. Three words: yum, yumm, and yummm! Wild Habit Pizza From the name, you can probably guess that wood-fired pizza is the star of the show here. Located on a corner lot in the heart of Seminyak, it's one of those places that's easier to reach on foot if you're already exploring the area, rather than dealing with traffic and parking. I've eaten here more than once, and these are some of my personal favourites: start with the charred octopus skewers and truffle & brie croquettes, then move on to the spicy salami & mozzarella pizza and spicy chorizo vodka pasta. If you're a truffle lover, the truffle pappardelle is also a winner. And please don't skip dessert! My favourite is the Italian flourless chocolate cake. TENKAI Japanese, but not quite Japanese. TENKAI is a Japanese Nikkei restaurant that brings together Japanese and Peruvian cuisines. With an interesting mix of Japanese techniques and Peruvian influences, every dish delivers a surprising burst of flavours that you’ll have to try for yourself - nothing like your ordinary Japanese food. Located inside the legendary Padma Resort Legian, TENKAI is also known for its Izakaya Nights and Teppanyaki experience, making it a fun spot for food lovers and those looking to celebrate special moments. They have recently launched new creations, including the Rocoto Tiradito Lobster, Buta Yakigyoza, Anticuchero Maki Nikkei, Parihuela Udon, and Premium Nigiri Nikkei. La Naya From hearty Japanese comfort food to quick bites and sweet treats, La Naya has all your cravings covered. Alongside classic Japanese favourites, you'll find koppe pan, fresh onigiri, buttery pastries, and refreshing kakigori that are perfect for Bali's tropical weather. Pair that with its bright and spacious interior, and you've got a restaurant that's just as suitable for a family gathering as it is for an afternoon catch-up with friends. Me Vui You can eaily spot this place when you're walking around Legian. Its bright yellow façade practically invites you in, and it looks just like an eatery you'd stumble upon in Vietnam. The menu covers all the Vietnamese classics you'd hope for; comforting bowls of pho, delicious banh mi, spring rolls, and many more. I've been here so many times and so far I haven't had a bad meal. It's the kind of place that's equally good for a quick lunch, or a casual dinner with friends. If you're not sure what to order, don't stress too much, because it's one of those places where almost everything you order is a safe bet. If you're after a quick sushi fix, the sushi train is the way to go. They also have an a la carte menu of Japanese comfort food and snacks. If you're arriving hungry, I'd recommend the bento set. It's a meal in itself, with a little bit of everything; sushi, edamame, karaage, and more. It also comes with miso soup and iced or hot green tea. The space is quite small and there's no dedicated parking area, so I'd suggest coming by scooter, walking if you're nearby, or simply ordering a Gojek. Sinaloa When you arrive at Sinaloa, you'll be greeted by the giant skulls at the entrance - one of the restaurant's most iconic features. If you enjoy people-watching, grab a seat downstairs by the bar, and if you'd prefer something a little quieter, head upstairs where it's usually more relaxed. This Mexican-inspired restaurant is open from breakfast through to late evening for drinks. The menu is packed with crowd-pleasers, including nachos, burritos, tacos, and churros, alongside a good selection of cocktails and refreshing drinks. While newer neighbourhoods in Bali continue to steal the spotlight, Legian and Seminyak remain two of the island's most reliable areas when it comes to food and convenience. Whether you're looking for a quick coffee, a family-friendly lunch, local Indonesian flavours, or a long dinner that turns into a late night out, there's something here for everyone. And just like my other restaurant lists, this one will continue to grow as I discover more places worth sharing. Coffee Shops in Denpasar What’s in Denpasar? Well...a lot, actually. Don’t just stick to one area when you’re on holiday in Bali. In case you didn’t know, Denpasar is the capital and largest city of Bali, as well as the island’s central hub for government, commerce, and everyday life. Beyond the busy city centre, you’ll find huge residential areas, local neighbourhoods, traditional markets, and plenty of places where everyday Balinese life carries on. And one of the things I love about checking out cafes and coffee shops here is the regular local prices. No viral cafe mark-up, just good coffee at prices that actually feel pretty reasonable. So, if you’re up for exploring Denpasar, here are a few coffee spots worth checking out, picked by the Kata Bella team and friends. If you’re looking for a more local afternoon coffee experience, this is definitely one to try. 📍Google Map: Nadhi Heritage Image credit: Nadhi Heritage Instagram Toko Kopi Jaya They have one in Denpasar and another in Kuta, and the last time I went to the one in Kuta, it was packed even though the space is pretty big. Coffee starts from 27K, and they also have snacks and light bites at pretty good prices too. The menu is a mix of Indonesian comfort snacks like tahu bakso (stuffed tofu) and pisang goreng (banana fritters), along with various pastries and banana bread. One unique coffee that caught our attention was their lemongrass americano. 📍Google Map: Toko Kopi Jaya Image credit: Toko Kopi Jaya Google page Mai Little Space This little spot is tucked upstairs and feels a bit like going over to your friend’s house and they serve you coffee! Hehe. It’s a nice and quiet space where you can chill, or get some work done for hours. Their must-tries on the menu are their dirty latte, which has a hint of blueberry cheesecake, and the matcha strawberry. This one is a real hidden gem, but probably won't stay "hidden" for long - because somewhere this nice is bound to get discovered soon! 📍Google Map: Mai Little Space Image credit: Mai Little Space Google page You may also like this article: The Ultimate Canggu Restaurant List by Kata Bella The Frontier House It’s a cute spot that somehow gives us the "cool streets-of-Java" vibes, like Malang or Jogja. The space is simple, cosy, and inviting- just the kind of place you want to hang out at with a good coffee and a croissant. We’re happy to see they’ve now opened a spot at Plaza Renon too! 📍Google Map: The Frontier House Image credit: The Frontier House Instagram Kyoto Country Club Heritage This is the OG, before Kyoto Country Club Southland in Umalas became the big hit it is today. It’s a Japanese-inspired specialty coffee house and fusion restaurant, so you’ll find a good mix of Japanese dishes and, of course, good coffee. The whole place is decked out in Japanese-inspired details, from the exterior to the moment you step inside, even extending to the outdoor space. They have out-of-the-box coffee creations, like guava, strawberry, yuzu, and...seaweed coffee? Who would’ve thought! They do all the classics too, so you can still grab a good latte or Americano, but while you’re here, why not be a little adventurous, right? Or, you can take home one of their bottled coffees, with flavours like rose, red ginger, and pineapple. They now have several branches across Jakarta, and another one in Denpasar. 📍Google Map: Second Floor Coffee Patimura Image credit: Second Floor Coffee Instagram Seniman Coffee It’s one of Bali’s well-known coffee roasters, and there’s a reason why they remain popular among locals and travellers. I think a big part of the appeal is that the coffee is consistently good. They have a great selection of beans from different parts of Indonesia, including plenty of varieties from Bali, so if you’re into coffee, there’s always something good to try here. The space in Denpasar is pretty artsy too - well, Seniman means “artist” after all. You’ll find vinyl records, art, and a little shop to browse while you’re there. 📍Google Map: Seniman Coffee Renon Image credit: Seniman Coffee Instagram While Bali’s beaches in Uluwatu and buzzing dining scene in Canggu are always fun to explore, don’t overlook Denpasar on your next holiday. The number of good coffee shop here is growing, with plenty of great local spots to discover, alongside some of the island’s best Indonesian food and street eats. Take a little detour from the usual Bali itinerary - you might just find a different side of the island worth coming back for.
