Brunch in Bali: Rediscovering Legian through Farmer’s Daughter

Brunch in Bali: Rediscovering Legian through Farmer’s Daughter Image

Brunch in Bali has taken on many forms over the years, but while trendy neighbourhoods like Canggu and Uluwatu rise in popularity, Legian will always hold a special place in my little heart. I still have core memories of me and my cousin wandering the streets of Legian, going to the beach and getting our hair braided, shopping at Surfer Girl, when days felt unhurried and things were simpler.

The neighbourhood has changed so much since then, as places naturally do. Still, there are pockets of Legian that feel reassuringly timeless. Some hotels have remained local favourites since the 90s, like Bali Mandira, holding onto their charm while growing alongside the area. And tucked away on a small street leading to the iconic Padma Beach – one of the surfers’ go-to spots, you’ll find a new charming coffee shop called Farmer’s Daughter.

The warm welcoming ambiance of Farmer’s Daughter

A Charming Coffee Shop in Legian

Decorated in woven bamboo, with earthy tones and natural textures, Farmer’s Daughter blends effortlessly into Bali’s laid-back rhythm. Its exterior alone already sets the tone: relaxed and inviting. This is the kind of coffee shop in Legian that feels perfect for slow mornings, brunches, or those unplanned meals that turn into long conversations. Whether you’re easing into the day with breakfast or stopping by after a beach walk, it immediately feels like somewhere you’re meant to linger.

Romanticising My Brunch in Bali

Serving everything you’d expect from a Bali café, Farmer’s Daughter offers a comforting menu of freshly baked pastries, desserts, and holiday-style dishes like pasta and fish and chips. (I still call it “holiday food” even though I live here, because it is what it is! lol.) For those days when you don’t feel like eating meat – which happens to me sometimes, there are also plenty of vegetarian options on the menu. Everything is made using locally sourced ingredients, which feels very on-brand for Bali. The island is blessed with such fresh produce, and I genuinely think every business should embrace that more. It’s one of the things that makes brunch in Bali feel special: simple food done well, with ingredients that actually taste like they were grown nearby.

Something that Feels Like Home

The name “Farmer’s Daughter” is just so cute! It gives off that girl-next-door vibe; warm, humble, kind-hearted, and friendly – don’t you think? And it suits this little nook in Legian perfectly. Everything about the place feels genuine and unpretentious, from the décor to the service. There’s no pressure to dress up or rush through your meal. Instead, you’re met with effortless Indonesian hospitality that feels sincere and comforting, the kind that makes you want to come back.

You’ll see a mix of locals, surfers fresh from the waves, families, and travellers who’ve wandered in by chance. It feels like a true neighbourhood coffee shop in Legian – welcoming to everyone.

So yeah, if you still think of Legian as an “old” neighbourhood, maybe you just haven’t explored it enough! Hehe. Try parking your scooter along the main Legian street and wandering through the smaller alleys like Gang Padma and beyond. You’ll be surprised by how many lovely spots are tucked away just a few steps from the busy road.

And if you’re on holiday, bonus points: Farmer’s Daughter is close to the airport, making it the perfect stop after you’ve checked out of your hotel for that one last cup of coffee in Bali before flying home. You’re welcome! 😉

Kata Bella's List of Good Coffee Shops in Denpasar

Coffee Shops in Denpasar What’s in Denpasar? Well...a lot, actually. Don’t just stick to one area when you’re on holiday in Bali. In case you didn’t know, Denpasar is the capital and largest city of Bali, as well as the island’s central hub for government, commerce, and everyday life. Beyond the busy city centre, you’ll find huge residential areas, local neighbourhoods, traditional markets, and plenty of places where everyday Balinese life carries on. And one of the things I love about checking out cafes and coffee shops here is the regular local prices. No viral cafe mark-up, just good coffee at prices that actually feel pretty reasonable. So, if you’re up for exploring Denpasar, here are a few coffee spots worth checking out, picked by the Kata Bella team and friends. You can find this special place on the second floor of a stationery shop on Jalan Gajah Mada - a street well known for fabric shopping among locals who make their own clothes and kebaya (traditional attire), and also home to Badung Market, Bali’s largest traditional market. If you’re looking for a more local afternoon coffee experience, this is definitely one to try. 📍Google Map: Nadhi Heritage Image credit: Nadhi Heritage Instagram Toko Kopi Jaya They have one in Denpasar and another in Kuta, and the last time I went to the one in Kuta, it was packed even though the space is pretty big. Coffee starts from 27K, and they also have snacks and light bites at pretty good prices too. The menu is a mix of Indonesian comfort snacks like tahu bakso (stuffed tofu) and pisang goreng (banana fritters), along with various pastries and banana bread. One unique coffee that caught our attention was their lemongrass americano. 📍Google Map: Toko Kopi Jaya Image credit: Toko Kopi Jaya Google page Mai Little Space This little spot is tucked upstairs and feels a bit like going over to your friend’s house and they serve you coffee! Hehe. It’s a nice and quiet space where you can chill, or get some work done for hours. Their must-tries on the menu are their dirty latte, which has a hint of blueberry cheesecake, and the matcha strawberry. This one is a real hidden gem, but probably won't stay "hidden" for long - because somewhere this nice is bound to get discovered soon! 📍Google Map: Mai Little Space Image credit: Mai Little Space Google page You may also like this article: The Ultimate Canggu Restaurant List by Kata Bella The Frontier House It’s a cute spot that somehow gives us the "cool streets-of-Java" vibes, like Malang or Jogja. The space is simple, cosy, and inviting- just the kind of place you want to hang out at with a good coffee and a croissant. We’re happy to see they’ve now opened a spot at Plaza Renon too! 📍Google Map: The Frontier House Image credit: The Frontier House Instagram Kyoto Country Club Heritage This is the OG, before Kyoto Country Club Southland in Umalas became the big hit it is today. It’s a Japanese-inspired specialty coffee house and fusion restaurant, so you’ll find a good mix of Japanese dishes and, of course, good coffee. The whole place is decked out in Japanese-inspired details, from the exterior to the moment you step inside, even extending to the outdoor space. It really makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a little corner of Japan. 📍Google Map: Kyoto Country Club Heritage Image credit: Kyoto Country Club Instagram You may also like this article: Aesthetic Cafes in Ubud - 7 Beautiful Spots Worth Adding to Your Itinerary Second Floor Coffee This one came recommended by our dear friend, the owner of Xoxo Bali, who’s often around Denpasar and swings by The Second Floor Coffee to recharge. They have out-of-the-box coffee creations, like guava, strawberry, yuzu, and...seaweed coffee? Who would’ve thought! They do all the classics too, so you can still grab a good latte or Americano, but while you’re here, why not be a little adventurous, right? Or, you can take home one of their bottled coffees, with flavours like rose, red ginger, and pineapple. They now have several branches across Jakarta, and another one in Denpasar. 📍Google Map: Second Floor Coffee Patimura Image credit: Second Floor Coffee Instagram Seniman Coffee It’s one of Bali’s well-known coffee roasters, and there’s a reason why they remain popular among locals and travellers. I think a big part of the appeal is that the coffee is consistently good. They have a great selection of beans from different parts of Indonesia, including plenty of varieties from Bali, so if you’re into coffee, there’s always something good to try here. The space in Denpasar is pretty artsy too - well, Seniman means “artist” after all. You’ll find vinyl records, art, and a little shop to browse while you’re there. 📍Google Map: Seniman Coffee Renon Image credit: Seniman Coffee Instagram While Bali’s beaches in Uluwatu and buzzing dining scene in Canggu are always fun to explore, don’t overlook Denpasar on your next holiday. The number of good coffee shop here is growing, with plenty of great local spots to discover, alongside some of the island’s best Indonesian food and street eats. Take a little detour from the usual Bali itinerary - you might just find a different side of the island worth coming back for.

SKAI Bar & Grill in Legian: Same Soul, Refined Experience Image

SKAI Bar & Grill in Legian: Same Soul, Refined Experience

The good old Legian never dies. I spent so much of my childhood in this neighbourhood that walking back through it now feels a bit like flipping through an old photo album; familiar corners, same vibe, and that nice feeling that not everything has changed. It’s comforting, in a way, to see some of the same restaurants still around - quietly standing the test of time.  And if you know, you know…some places, they evolve, but never lose their charm. Not trying too hard, not chasing trends - just naturally keeping up, staying relevant in their own way, while holding on to what made people fall in love with them in the first place. One of them is SKAI Bar & Grill, formerly known as SKAI Beach Club. And yes, as the name suggests, the concept’s had a bit of a glow-up. The heart of it never goes anywhereOpen Flame, Bold Flavours, and Signature Cuts You may also like this article: Bali Home Bakeries to Sweeten Your Celebrations The heart of it never goes anywhere Don’t worry though, the iconic beachfront pool and those outdoor seats we all love are still very much there (I know, some memories are just too good to let go of). It still carries that same laid-back, by-the-sea energy that made it such a favourite in the first place. But now, there’s a cosy indoor extension with 34 seats - perfect if you’re into that open-flame, grill-side kind of experience that SKAI Bar & Grill is leaning into. There’s also a new terrace that low-key feels like a secret garden - very much an evolution of the OG SKAI vibe. Think floor-to-ceiling windows, lush greenery everywhere, and laser-cut screens that look dreamy during golden hour (warm, dappled light kind of situation). The seating is all hand-woven in soft driftwood greys and sandy taupes, tying everything back to the natural beachy colour palette (my bright pink outfit would really pop here! hehe). So yeah, anyway - new space, same soul. The new seating area that feels warm and homely You may also like this article: Brunch in Bali - Rediscovering Legian through Farmer’s Daughter Open Flame, Bold Flavours, and Signature Cuts Now onto the food - because this is the even more interesting part. Picture all that calming seaside ambience paired with their heroes on the menu; tender cuts with za’atar, citrusy sumac, a touch of smoky paprika. Simple, but so good. Add in the sea breeze, some greenery, and soft lantern light overhead… it’s seaside dining, in Bali, but with a slice of Eastern Mediterranean twist. At the heart of it all is an open kitchen. You get to watch the chefs fully in their element, working the fire and charcoal. There’s something quite satisfying about seeing it all happen right in front of you. This is where SKAI’s signature cuts come in; Angus tenderloin, grass-fed MB3+, pork chop Pata Negra Ibérico, and more. And if you’re someone who likes to choose your cut properly, you’ll appreciate this: the dry-aging chamber is now on display too, beautifully laid out on rustic maple boards. Take your time, have a look, and pick exactly what you’re in the mood for. The kind of spread that feeds the soul All in all, SKAI Bar & Grill, and this new expansion, is such a lovely addition to Legian’s dining scene. It’s one of those spots that feels familiar, but in the best, refreshed kind of way - like coming back to something you love, but better than you remember. And the fact that it’s located at Padma Resort Legian, a resort that holds so many beautiful memories for me, just makes it even more special to me! 🫶🏻✨ SKAI BAR & GRILL🥩 Cuisine: Eastern Mediterranean💰 Price range: From 250K/ person⏰ Opening hour: Mon-Thu, 12pm-11pm/ Fri-Sat, 12pm-12am, Sun, 12.30pm-11pm📍Address: Jl.
