Brunch in Bali has taken on many forms over the years, but while trendy neighbourhoods like Canggu and Uluwatu rise in popularity, Legian will always hold a special place in my little heart. I still have core memories of me and my cousin wandering the streets of Legian, going to the beach and getting our hair braided, shopping at Surfer Girl, when days felt unhurried and things were simpler.

The neighbourhood has changed so much since then, as places naturally do. Still, there are pockets of Legian that feel reassuringly timeless. Some hotels have remained local favourites since the 90s, like Bali Mandira, holding onto their charm while growing alongside the area. And tucked away on a small street leading to the iconic Padma Beach – one of the surfers’ go-to spots, you’ll find a new charming coffee shop called Farmer’s Daughter.

Decorated in woven bamboo, with earthy tones and natural textures, Farmer’s Daughter blends effortlessly into Bali’s laid-back rhythm. Its exterior alone already sets the tone: relaxed and inviting. This is the kind of coffee shop in Legian that feels perfect for slow mornings, brunches, or those unplanned meals that turn into long conversations. Whether you’re easing into the day with breakfast or stopping by after a beach walk, it immediately feels like somewhere you’re meant to linger.

Serving everything you’d expect from a Bali café, Farmer’s Daughter offers a comforting menu of freshly baked pastries, desserts, and holiday-style dishes like pasta and fish and chips. (I still call it “holiday food” even though I live here, because it is what it is! lol.) For those days when you don’t feel like eating meat – which happens to me sometimes, there are also plenty of vegetarian options on the menu. Everything is made using locally sourced ingredients, which feels very on-brand for Bali. The island is blessed with such fresh produce, and I genuinely think every business should embrace that more. It’s one of the things that makes brunch in Bali feel special: simple food done well, with ingredients that actually taste like they were grown nearby.

The name “Farmer’s Daughter” is just so cute! It gives off that girl-next-door vibe; warm, humble, kind-hearted, and friendly – don’t you think? And it suits this little nook in Legian perfectly. Everything about the place feels genuine and unpretentious, from the décor to the service. There’s no pressure to dress up or rush through your meal. Instead, you’re met with effortless Indonesian hospitality that feels sincere and comforting, the kind that makes you want to come back.

You’ll see a mix of locals, surfers fresh from the waves, families, and travellers who’ve wandered in by chance. It feels like a true neighbourhood coffee shop in Legian – welcoming to everyone.

So yeah, if you still think of Legian as an “old” neighbourhood, maybe you just haven’t explored it enough! Hehe. Try parking your scooter along the main Legian street and wandering through the smaller alleys like Gang Padma and beyond. Sazón Bali : Spanish flavours in Canggu

Spanish Restaurant in Canggu Bali is such a melting pot of cultures, and as a food lover, I feel like the dining options here are endless. I love Indonesian and Balinese food, of course - but I also enjoy trying dishes from other countries. One of the things I really appreciate about living in Bali is that I can explore so many different cuisines without having to travel far. Not long ago, a friend of mine from Regent Bali Canggu invited me to the grand opening of one of their new restaurants, Sazón. They gave us a little sneak peek of what’s on the menu during the party, and it made me want to come back for more. And I did! I went back to Sazon, and here’s a little story about my evening filled with delicious Spanish food and good company. I rarely eat Spanish food and, I gotta be honest, I didn’t know much beyond the famous paella. But Chef Javier passionately walked us through each dish as he served our dinner, from starters to dessert - and I soaked it all up like story time on a plate. I enjoyed every bite. Turns out Gilda is a 1946 black-and-white romance film starring Rita Hayworth. So, why was the Gilda on my plate marinated tuna with olives and peppers? hehe. Well, Gilda is a classic Spanish tapa named after the film because, just like the movie, it’s bold, salty, and full of spicy flavour. It was a lovely intro to the courses that followed.  Pa Amb Tomàquet As simple as it looks, and as basic as it sounds on the menu; bread, tomato, ham - this dish tasted like so much more than just those three elements. I’m not exactly sure where all the flavour came from, but wow, my taste buds and tummy did a little happy dance. The ham isn’t your average ham, it’s Jamón Ibérico, a premium cured pork from Spain. I could’ve easily eaten a whole plate of it, but there was more food on the way, and I had to save some room in my tiny stomach. Croquetas The name pretty much says it all. We have an Indonesian version called kroket - pronounced the same. We tried the one filled with mushrooms, and it was deliciosa! At this point, I started to regret my fitted outfit choice! Haha, I probably left Sazón looking three months pregnant (with food baby, of course). Okay, back to the dish - I’m a big seafood fan, especially scallops, and everything in this one worked perfectly together: dill, cucumber, almonds. Patatas Bravas Potatoes - but make it fancy, with aioli and spicy tomato. I’ve always loved potatoes in any form, but I didn’t know there was another kind to love… until this. Ibérico Grilled Pork & Mushroom Paella And here it is - the main event and the highlight of my evening: the paella. Rich, comforting, and full of flavour, this dish perfectly combines tender Ibérico grilled pork with earthy mushrooms. Even though it’s not something I eat often, it tasted very comforting and somehow familiar. Santiago Cake, Orange Curd & Toasted Meringue I’m a dessert person, and I believe there’s always room for dessert—but we were heading into a serious food coma, so we decided to share the Santiago cake, a Spanish almond cake. It’s flourless and moist with a sponge-like texture—not too sweet, with a lovely hint of citrus from the orange curd. All in all, Sazón is a great addition to Canggu’s buzzing dining scene. Whether you’re into Spanish food or just here for a tasty night out like me, they serve up good vibes and even better dishes. The Cave Bali: A One-of-a-Kind Dining Experience

The Cave Bali had been on my dining list for quite some time. I’ve lived in Bali long enough that anything more than 10 minutes from home now feels far. And just like that, I rarely go anywhere. But every now and then, my best friend and I like to dress up and reward ourselves with a nice dinner. So we finally decided to try this seven-course lunch by Chef Ryan Clift - a unique dining experience set literally inside a cave, part of The Edge Bali resort. We live in Canggu, while the restaurant is in Pecatu, supposedly about an hour’s drive away. Wrong! In reality, it took us almost three hours - though to be fair, it was during Bali’s wet season… and also the famously unpredictable Uluwatu traffic. Was it worth it? Here’s my experience. Sitting on the famous Uluwatu's majestic cliff, getting there takes a little commitment. After our interestingly long car journey, we were rewarded with a beautiful setting and a warm welcome from the friendly staff, who took us to The Cave by buggy - that’s how big the property is. At first, the restaurant entrance looked quite normal, but the moment we stepped inside, it felt like entering a whole new world. A staircase led down into a subterranean cave complete with stalactites and all! I had seen this place in magazines and on social media, but experiencing it in real life just hit different. It was slightly chilly inside (glad I brought a cardigan), and the lighting was perfect: dim and atmospheric, yet still bright enough to read the menu and see things lol. A quick tip: reservations are essential, and arriving on time is important. Lunch and dinner begin at fixed times due to limited seating, the structured menu, and the intermission shows. Luckily, we anticipated the long journey, so we made it just in time. The interior, viewed from the stairs - only 22 seats available. Delightful Bites, One After Another We had booked the seven-course meal, so all we had to do was sit back and wait for each dish to arrive one by one. I actually love this style of dining - I tend to eat small portions but frequently, so the pacing allowed enough time to digest before the next course arrived. During the 15-minute intermissions between courses, a video-mapping projection played across the cave ceiling. It felt magical and added another layer to the whole experience. Our foodventure began with a delightful spread of Parmesan Beignet, Smoked Gindara Tartlet (my personal favourite - more please!), Mussel Tempura, and Tomato Jelly. Next came the Scallop Ajo Blanco (also amazing!) and Foie Gras Cheesecake - ok, this is a combination I wasn’t really sure about (sorry!). After another intermission, we were served Toothfish à la Viennoise. By this point, I was already quite full, but I couldn’t skip the next dish: Wagyu Pot-au-Feu, which turned out to be the absolute star of the day! But before that, another intermission gave us time to explore the cave (which you can actually do!). Helmets and torches are provided for safety because, well, it is a real natural cave after all - better safe than sorry. And then came dessert: hello, Olive Oil Sorbet and Lemon Tart! The perfect sweet ending and absolutely delicious. Do note that the menu changes every four months, so your experience may be completely different from mine. Dining at The Cave is more than just a meal; it’s an experience that blends nature, and fine dining in a way that feels both intimate and theatrical. Yes, the journey there may require patience, but once you step inside, time seems to slow down. It’s the kind of experience that reminds you why it’s worth leaving your comfort zone every now and then - especially when good food, a magical setting, and great company are waiting. “No more Instagram ads, please. I’m scared too many people will come,” laughs my dad, the man behind Koyotake Ramen, Yogyakarta. While most warung owners dream of bustling crowds, he prefers a steady stream of loyal customers who enjoy his homemade ramen. Tucked away in a quiey village in Bantul, Koyotake serves Japanese comfort food with heart – think rich Tori Paitan broth, savory Shoyu, and crispy gyozas. From Five-Star Kitchens to a Small Ramen Dream Back in the day, my dad worked in the fast-paced, always-hectic F&B department of various 5-star hotels. After years of juggling high-pressure environments, he decided to retire early in his 40s. His dream was simple: to run a small ramen shop like the ones he admires in Japanese travel documentaries. Small but mighty. Why ramen, though? And where did his love for Japanese food come from? To be honest - I’m not sure, haha!
