New Canggu Restaurant Has Arrived: Mykaza at The Arc House

Canggu is never short of places to eat. From charming little cafes in quiet corners to late-night favourites that keep the crowds coming, there always seems to be a new spot popping up around every corner. And now, there’s another one to add to the list – a place for slow afternoons, golden-hour sunsets, and laid-back weekends in Canggu.

Tucked inside The Arc House Canggu, a boutique retreat with 19 private pool suite villas, lies Mykaza – a little rooftop oasis with an easy, feel-good energy. The vibe is elevated yet relaxed, with that effortless barefoot Bali charm. What began as a modern Japanese izakaya concept evolved when the team moved to Bali. Surrounded by the island’s culture, its people, and incredible local produce, the idea grew into something even more special: a space where Japanese roots and Balinese spirit come together beautifully.

Mykaza, Su Casa

Gerardo Barrientos, the F&B Director at Portier Hotels (the operator of The Arc House brand), together with his team really leaned all the way into the idea of building something that doesn’t just exist in Bali, but actually listens to it. The result is a concept where Japanese technique doesn’t overshadow local culture, but lets it shine in its own quiet, confident way.

That same balance carries through the space itself. The interiors have a modern Japanese feel – clean, bright, without feeling too minimal or cold. Little rooms with tatami seating add a touch of tradition, while the overall design feels fresh, and airy. Step outside, and the mood shifts into tropical Bali holiday mode with a rooftop pool, and sun loungers. For Gerardo, Mykaza is also about something a bit rare these days – a space where people actually connect, not just sit together while scrolling in silence (we’ve all been there!).

And maybe you can already guess it – the name Mykaza sounds a little like “mi casa”, and that’s exactly the idea. A blend of the Japanese name “Mikasa” and the phrase mi casa es tu casa…my home is your home. The hope is that everyone who walks into Mykaza feels that same sense of comfort and belonging. Come as you are and make yourself at home.

A Japanese Menu with Bali in Mind

On the menu, things get even more interesting. It’s where Japanese and Balinese flavours come together in combinations that sound unexpected but make perfect sense the moment they land on your table. Think Babi Guling (Balinese iconic suckling pork) Dry Ramen, Hamachi Miso Matah, and Matcha-Miso Dadar Gulung (coconut-filled rolled pancake).

More Japanese comfort dishes not to miss – start with the Asparagus & Ebi Tempura, Sake Tenkasu, or Tuna Wonton. Then move on to the Katsu Bali Curry before wrapping things up with Indonesia’s all-time favourite afternoon tea snack: Pisang Goreng (banana fritters) served with black sesame gelato. It’s a pairing that deserves a spotlight of its own.

The drinks are just as fun – with cocktails featuring jamu (Indonesia’s traditional herbal drink), Arak Bali (Balinese distilled spirit), and tea-based creations, the island finds its way into every glass, quietly reminding you where you are.

Beyond good food

Mykaza is very much a team-led space too. Head Chef Andy, Head Mixologist Agus, and the wider crew all shape the menu together – with the Balinese team playing a big part in adding those quiet local nuances that make everything feel real, not performative.

And beyond the food, it’s everything else that comes with it: a rooftop pool, sunset views, and that easy Canggu rhythm where, as I said in my previous article, no one’s really in a rush here. And even though life in Bali can feel like one long holiday, weekends still carry that special kind of magic where slowing down and sharing good food just feels even better.

Looking ahead, Mykaza is already shaping up to be more than just a restaurant. Sunday set brunches, sake tastings, cigar and whisky nights, and laid-back poolside gatherings are all in the works. Because at its core, Mykaza isn’t trying to be the next “hot spot” – it is a home you will always come back to.

Mister Wasabi is one of the latest additions bringing fresh energy to the neighbourhood, with a creative Japanese menu that leans into the luxe side of things. Upstairs is a sleek Japanese restaurant centred around an open kitchen, while downstairs takes a more casual izakaya approach, with sharing plates and playful cocktails. It’s a smart-casual spot, so it’s a little pricier than your everyday Japanese joint, but I’d say it’s worth it. A few must-tries are the beef saikoro steak and, my personal favourite, the chicken nanban with garlic rice. The menu is extensive, with plenty of food and drink options. And when I say extensive, I mean it - they even have quite a selection for vegetarians. I’d say it’s best to come with a group so you can order a bunch of things and try a bit of everything. They specialise in premium cuts of meat cooked to perfection, but also have a seafood set menu if you’re more into seafood. Aside from the main protein, they have all the usual Japanese favourites on the side, like chawan mushi, wakame salad, karaage and katsu. They do sushi a little differently here - instead of the usual sushi train, they have a sushi boat! Very cute. The vibe is smart casual, and there’s also an outdoor seating area, which is a nice touch. The menu is packed all the Japanese favourites you’ll want to try, so it’s very easy to over-order, but make sure you save some room for their crème brûlée. They have all your Japanese favourites, from beautifully presented sushi and sashimi to grilled dishes and an omakase menu if you’re feeling a little fancy. Aesthetic cafes in Ubud. I rarely find myself heading to Ubud, but whenever I do, I’m always reminded that one day is never quite enough. Aside from its lush landscapes and slower pace, Ubud has a way of offering experiences that feel fresh and different from other Bali neighbourhoods - from wandering through art spaces and rice field trails to joining creative workshops, chasing hidden waterfalls, or simply finding a quiet corner surrounded by nature. And then...the coffee shops! So many beautiful cafes to explore, so little time, and (sadly) only so much space in my stomach, haha. With earthy interiors, jungle views, and that unmistakable Ubud aesthetic that just hits different, every coffee stop feels like a little experience of its own - from the way sunlight filters through rattan lampshades to how your matcha latte somehow looks even better against a perfect terracotta backdrop. It may be small, but it's cosy and there's upstairs seating area as well. The menu offers plenty of Western dishes to choose from, though unfortunately there aren't any desserts. Jinny's Garden | 📍Jl. Goutama, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud Sacra Stuja If you're after a place with that laid-back Ubud vibe, this is the spot. It feels calm from the outside, and once you step in, you'll find a cosy bohemian space that almost feels like a giant tent, with plenty of natural touches and lush greenery adding to its charm. If you've got your furry friend with you, you'll be happy to know it's pet-friendly too. Clear Cafe's open-air space is surrounded by lush greenery, with a peaceful fish pond creating the calming sound of flowing water.
