Chinese Restaurants in Bali: A Local Guide Image

Chinese Restaurants in Bali

When we say Sunday brunch in Indonesia, we’re not usually talking about roasts, Yorkshire puddings, barbeque, or oysters. Us Indos grew up believing that Sunday brunch meant one thing and one thing only: dim sum galore. Steamed baskets of har gow, pork siu mai, chicken siu mai, cheung fun drenched in sauce…yum, yum, and yum!

So, trust us when we say we know a thing or two about good Chinese restaurants in Bali, hehe. From old-school favourites that have been around forever to newer spots worth checking out, we’ve gathered the places that deserve a spot on your food list.

Little Hong Kong

Little Hongkong is one of our all-time favourites. The place isn’t fancy, but you don’t need fancy, you need good food. You simply can’t come here without ordering the kung pao chicken with Hainan rice. And if you’re feeling a little under the weather, their chicken congee is just the kind of comfort food you need. As for the rest of the menu, we’ll leave that up to you, because everything is good.

Lai Lai

No pork, no lard, but damn delicious! Right opposite Little Hongkong, you’ll find this spot serving very tasty Singaporean chicken rice. You can choose how you like your chicken; Hainanese, satay, or barbecue, or why only pick one when you can have all of them? Also, the prices are pretty affordable here.

Warung Laota

How can we leave the legendary Laota out of our Chinese restaurant list in Bali, right? New modern Chinese restaurants can keep popping up, but we’ll forever be loyal to this OG. Sure, they’re famous for their congee, but literally everything else from the menu is good that picking a favourite is very hard. There are three locations of Laota now, so you can go to or GoFood from the one nearest to you.

Wanaku

Make sure you come here with a big group, not only because Chinese food is always better when shared, but also because their dim sum spread is so good you’ll want to order everything on the menu! From classic har gow, siu mai and cheung fun to their tempting mains, there’s plenty to get excited about. But save some room for their onde-onde with lotus paste please please please! And if you’re not in the mood to share, their wonton noodle soup is pure comfort in a bowl.

Happy Mie

This one is more of a humble noodle shack or warung than a restaurant, but good noodles don’t need fancy surroundings. Mie means noodles, so Happy Mie literally translates to “happy noodles”, and they do make us happy (from just 30K per portion!) Hehe. If you’re not in the mood for noodles, they’ve also got wonton soup, fried rice, rice with BBQ pork or chicken, and stir-fried mixed vegetables.

Wei Fu

Dim sum is their main thing – no pork, no lard, and they taste pretty decent. You’ll also find other comforting options on the menu like congee, wonton soup and noodles. Perfect for a casual dim sum fix without spending too much, because they are very affordable. They have three locations around Bali, so you’ve got a few options to choose from!

Restoran Renon

First of all, what an interesting name! You wouldn’t guess it’s a Chinese restaurant, lol. The interior gives us 90s restaurant vibes, which in our books, is usually a good sign. They’ve also got that classic old-school style menu system; pick your protein (beef, chicken or seafood), then choose how you want it cooked (black pepper, salt and pepper, sweet and sour, and more). Their dim sum menu is pretty complete too. Plenty of choices and pretty good food, what’s not to love?

Pandaloka

Funny story: this place was recommended by our friend who loves pandas. Surely that’s not the reason she likes this restaurant, though (or is it?) Hehe. Anyway, like any good Chinese restaurant, they’ve got both a dim sum menu and a regular menu. If you can handle the heat, give their mala chicken or mala poached chicken a go. They also have mala lamian noodles with chicken or beef, though the original lamian is pretty good too.

Wong Fei Hung

As they proudly state on their Instagram, they’re a “Pork Specialist”. And boy, do they mean it! Their signature crispy pork belly is the star of the show, but if you’re a pork lover, there’s plenty more to dig into, from pork belly rice and noodles to pork ball soup, pork dumplings, and more. If you’re not a big fan of pork they’ve also got chicken, beef and seafood options. There are two Wong Fei Hung locations, so take your pick!

Double Dragon Temple

Noodles and dumplings – we don’t need much to be happy, and this combo already ticks all the boxes! All served in a setting that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a Hong Kong street food stall. They also have buns with pork char siu and black sesame fillings, as well as scallion pancakes. They might sound like they’re just little bites, but they’re quite filling! Add this to your Ubud stops.

A gentle reminder that Chinese food is best enjoyed with a group, preferably one that doesn’t mind ordering almost half the dim sum menu, hehehe. This is one of those times when the more really is the merrier! Anyway, we’re not claiming to know every Chinese restaurant in Bali (if only eating were a full-time job!), but these are the places that have made it onto our radar, for one reason or another. Some are old favourites, others are newer discoveries, and a few might just become your next regular spot. Got a spot you swear by? We’re always up for another plate of good food.

Oleh-Oleh Bali to Bring Home Other than Pie Susu Image

Oleh-Oleh Bali to Bring Home Other than Pie Susu

Oleh-Oleh Bali other than Pie Susu If there's one thing Indonesians take seriously when travelling, it's oleh-oleh. These are little presents you bring back from your trip for the people at home; family, friends, neighbours or colleagues. More often than not, they come in the form of food. I actually think it’s a pretty sweet tradition. It’s like bringing home a little piece of your holiday and sharing it with the people you care about. I still find myself buying oleh-oleh every now and then when I travel, although in some circles, it has become less of a tradition and more of an unwritten rule, haha! Among the usual favourites from Bali are pie susu (milk pie) and pia (sweet filled pastry). I have no idea who popularised them, but somehow they’ve become the unofficial stars of Bali oleh-oleh. These days, though, there are plenty of other interesting things to bring home beyond the usual suspects. So here are some of them that the Kata Bella team has gathered. You’ll find pretty much every fruit you can think of here, from tropical fruits like soursop and mangosteen to more unusual ones you’ve probably never even heard of, like buni, kepundung and kaliasem. With so many flavours to choose from, you’ll probably have a hard time deciding, but you can try the testers before committing. Our personal favourites are the lemon butter, passion fruit, and mango vanilla. 📍Google Map: Confiture de Bali Image credit: Confiture de Bali Instagram Jungle Gold Chocolate It used to be called Pods Chocolate, but the brand has since rebranded as Jungle Gold. They’ve got the classics, with chocolate ranging from 64% to 100% cacao, plus fun flavours like Balinese coffee, orange, sea salt and Earl Grey. And if you’re feeling adventurous, there are some seriously unexpected ones too like rujak mangga, durian, mie goreng (fried noodles), and even rendang! Whoah! You can find most of the flavours in supermarkets around Bali, but it’s also nice to pop into their big store in Sanur. 📍Google Map: Jungle Gold Chocolate Sanur Image credit: Jungle Gold Chocolate Instagram Balinese Coffee "Kupu-Kupu Bola Dunia" Kupu-Kupu Bola Dunia is a Balinese coffee brand with a pretty unique name - it translates to “butterfly and globe”, any guesses why? Hehe. They’ve been around since 1935, and you can enjoy their coffee at the legendary Bhinneka Djaja coffee shop in Denpasar, and pick up some ground beans to take home. It’s a little taste of Bali to bring back with you, and makes a pretty nice gift for the coffee-loving friends back home. 📍Google Map: Bhineka Djaja (Kopi Bali) Image credit: Bhineka Djaja Website Bali Crispig We love the name Crispig - so clever for a brand that makes crispy pork crackers, haha! There are four flavours to choose from: original, seaweed, spicy and sweet potato. They're simple, crunchy snacks, and because they're nice and dry like crisps, they're also pretty travel-friendly, which is exactly what you want when packing for the flight home.  📍Google Map: Bali Crispig Image credit: Crispig Instagram You may also like this article: Bali Markets to Visit During Your Holiday Rosalie Cheese We're proud to have such a good local cheese on the island. Rosalie makes their cheeses with farm-fresh local milk and traditional techniques, and the range includes chèvre, black pepper goat cheese and halloumi. They make snacks too, like their signature cheesy grissini and cassava crackers, which are easy to finish in one sitting. You can find them in major supermarkets across Bali, or pop by their cheese boutique for a tasting while you're there! 📍Google Map: Cheese Boutique by Rosalie Image credit: Rosalie Cheese Instagram Titiles Another one for the pork lovers! If you don’t know Titiles yet, they make all kinds of processed meats and savoury snacks, and they’re especially famous for their pork products. They’ve been around for aaaages, and you can buy everything from sausages, bacon and ham to dendeng (jerky) and abon (meat floss), all from their very old-school-looking shop in Denpasar. 📍Google Map: Titiles Bali Image source: Google Harum Cake They make pie susu too, but I'd like to highlight the main character: the lapis legit. It's a traditional Indonesian layered cake; buttery, dense, and rich. Each paper-thin layer is baked one at a time. Yes, one-at-a-time. So yes, so much respect for the patience behind every slice! Their lapis legit comes in many flavours: original, coffee, prune, cheese, chocolate, and more. They've been at it since 1997, so if you're taking some home, relax. They know exactly how to pack it so your lapis legit arrives safely. 📍Google Map: Harum Bali Lapis Legit Cake Shop Image credit: Harum Cake Instagram Sate Lilit Bu Putu This one is a home business. If you haven’t tried sate lilit yet, it’s a Balinese-style satay made with seasoned minced meat, wrapped around bamboo sticks or lemongrass stalks, then grilled until smoky. A pack of 25 starts from just 95K, and they’re vacuum-packed, so they’re easy to take with you when travelling. They also make grilled chicken and betutu chicken, but the sate lilit is what they’re best known for. Just make sure to pre-order at least one day in advance through the contact number on their Instagram. Instagram: @satelilit.buputu Image credit: Sate Lilit Bu Putu Instagran We hope you enjoy our growing list of oleh-oleh Bali! A quick disclaimer: we have nothing against pie susu! In fact, we love them. We just thought we'd share some other interesting businesses worth checking out, so you can bring a slice of Bali home to your loved ones. These local makers put a lot of care into what they do, and a little support goes a long way. We'll keep adding to the list as we discover more, so do check back every now and then. And if you have a favourite spot that we've missed, we'd love to hear about it!

Bali on a Budget: Cheap Eats in Canggu for Under 100K

Cheap Eats in Canggu When friends ask me, “Is Bali expensive?”, it’s not really a yes or no answer - it really depends on your lifestyle, what you like, what you need, what you’re used to...and what you eat. I’m a local, so my diet is pretty simple: chicken and rice is already more than enough. I’m also always happy with tempe, stir-fried veggies, and rice for just around 20K a plate. But if you’re here on holiday, you might want to treat yourself - and it’s very easy to spend 500K or even 1 million per person on a nice steak or a proper indulgent dining experience. And if you’re travelling Bali on a budget, warung (a small local eatery serving pre-cooked, homemade Indonesian dishes) is your best friend, along with these spots around Canggu I’ve carefully curated that are affordable, clean, and less likely to give you Bali belly. Cheap Eats in Canggu You may also like this article: 5 Must-Visit Coffee Shops in Canggu, Umalas, and Nearby Areas THE GOOD OLD WARUNGS Warung Sika This is probably my most-visited warung in Canggu. I love it because they have such an extensive menu - some dishes rotate, but many are available every day. Try the tempe orek (stir-fried tempe), chicken rendang, bakwan jagung (corn fritters), and pretty much any of the veggie dishes - they’re all good. Just a heads-up: it can get super busy around lunchtime, so be prepared to queue, or try coming before or after 12. 💰 Price range: IDR 25K-75K/ meal ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 9am-9pm 📍 Address: Jl. Tanah Barak No.45, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Badung, Bali Image credit: Warung Sika Instagram Warung Jawa Bu Sri I think this warung is underrated. But if you want true Indo flavours, the kind we actually eat every day (not the adjusted versions for tourists), this is where you should go. You’ll find proper local dishes like pecel (steamed veggies with peanut sauce), ayam suwir balado (shredded chilli chicken), and Javanese-style rendang. Sri is the name of the super lovely lady who owns and runs the warung. 💰 Price range: IDR 15K-30K/ meal ⏰ Opening hours:  📍 Address: Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong Br No.19, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Badung, Bali Image credit: Warung Jawa Bu Sri Instagram Warung Makan Siang This is the kind of warung that makes you feel like you’ve just dropped by a friend’s place and she’s cooked for you, hehe. The space is small, but just right. They’ve got all the usual Indonesian favourites on rotation, and every now and then there are special dishes like rawon (black beef soup) or sayur lodeh (vegetable soup with coconut milk). They also often stock desserts and iced coffee from local home businesses, which makes it feel even more homely. 💰 Price range: IDR 25K-50K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 11.30am-4pm 📍 Address: Jl. Beringin, Dalung, Kec. Kuta Utara, Badung, Bali Image credit: Warung Makan Siang Instagram Warung Local I’ve been a customer since they first opened and I once sold my homemade cookies there, hehe. It’s great to see them growing bigger now (literally, space-wise). If you’re new to warung food, Warung Local is a good place to start. The flavours are “Indonesian enough” for us locals, but not too heavy on the seasoning, if you know what I mean. It’s also on the main Batu Bolong street, so it’s really easy to spot. 💰 Price range: IDR 50K-90K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 10am-10pm 📍 Address: Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.10, Canggu, Badung, Bali Image credit: Warung Local Instagram Warung Tiga Tiga means three, and yes - it’s the same as Warung Dua (two) in Umalas. I’d call this an elevated version of an Indo warung, because aside from the Indonesian menu, they also have Western favourites like lasagna and quiches, plus some healthier options - quite a few salad choices too. Price-wise, it’s adjusted to what they offer, so it’s more expensive than a regular warung, but still affordable. 💰 Price range: IDR 50K-90K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 7am-11pm 📍 Address: Jl. Nelayan No.27, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Badung, Bali Image credit: Warung Tiga Instagram You may also like this article: Bali Home Bakeries to Sweeten Your Celebrations RICE BOWL, NOODLES, AND EVERYTHING ELSE Nasigo Rice bowls are probably the best fix when you’re busy and starving. Rice and protein in one container - whoever came up with that, thank you! Nasigo has a solid range of chicken options, from teriyaki to green chilli, starting from just 35K. If you’re more into beef, they’ve got ground beef with basil and a beef patty from 45K. Portions are generous too.  And if you’re in the mood for something sweet, their iced matcha latte is a nice pick from just 35K. Get both a rice bowl and a matcha, and you’re still spending under 100K - not bad at all. 💰 Price range: From IDR 35K-45K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 11am - 8pm 📍 Address: Jl. Raya Babakan Canggu No.91, Kec. Kuta Utara, Badung, Bali  Image credit: Nasigo Instagram Daeng Burger Not all burgers in Canggu are pricey -  some are still super affordable (but also decent), like Daeng Burger. They’ve got a wide range from classic beef burgers to chicken and vegetarian options, but my personal favourite is their Morrokowich panini. It’s got grilled harissa chicken, cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, rocket, and tzatziki sauce, and very delicious for just….drumroll please…59K! Woot woot! 💰 Price range: 59K-90K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 11am - 1am 📍 Address: Jl. Raya Babakan Canggu No.33A, Kec. Kuta Utara, Badung, Bali Image credit: Daeng Burger Instagram Warung Ayu Ayam Bakar Ala Jimbaran This is a proper local Indo grilled chicken and seafood spot, but I’ve taken so many of my foreign friends here and they’ve all loved it so far. It’s done in that Jimbaran-style grilling; smoky, slightly sweet, nicely charred, and super flavourful, without having to drive all the way to Jimbaran. You can get a simple plate of rice and grilled chicken from just 45K, or go for a sharing platter that works for 2 up to 10 people if you’re coming with a group. You can also order your favourite seafood individually, from grilled fish to prawns, and more, and build your own feast. Super flexible, super satisfying, and great value for money.  💰 Price range: 45K-90K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 11am - 10pm 📍 Address: Jl. Pererenan, Kec. Mengwi, Kabupaten Badung, Bali Image credit: Warung Ayu Google page You may also like this article: Brunch in Bali - Rediscovering Legian through Farmer’s Daughter Amy Wong Sometimes I’m in the mood for some Chinese-Indo comfort food, and when that craving hits, I always order from Amy Wong. They’ve got a cute little space, but somehow I always order online and I pretty much stick to the same thing every time: kwetiau goreng spesial (stir-fried rice noodles). Fun fact: when Indos put “spesial” on the menu, it usually means you’re getting the full upgrade; either a fried egg on top and/or all the extra topping, hehe. And also, don’t skip their fried bakso (Indo-style meatballs) for a snack! 💰 Price range: 25K-60K ⏰ Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 11am - 9pm 📍 Address:  Jl. Pantai Berawa, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Badung, Bali  Image credit: Amy Wong Instagram Mie and More This little noodle shack makes one of the best Sichuan noodles I’ve had. Also, they added chicken and beef curry noodles to the menu, which is very dangerous (for my self-control). Be careful with their chilli oil - it’s so good you’ll want to pour a lot, but it packs a punch. And complete your noodles with a side of dumplings. They’ve got options from chicken, beef, pork, to mushroom. 💰 Price range: From IDR 50K ⏰ Opening hours: Mon, Wed-Sat, 1pm-12am, Tue 4pm-12am, Sun 7pm-12am 📍 Address:  Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.26, Kec. Kuta Utara, Badung, Bali  Image credit: Mie and More Instagram Happy Pork Rendang Rendang, but make it pork. It might be controversial in some parts of Indonesia, but clearly not in Bali, especially when it’s this good. True to the name, they specialise in pork rendang (that rich, slow-cooked Indonesian dry curry we all love). You can have it the classic way with rice, or switch things up with rendang nasi goreng, a rendang rice burger, or even a burrito. I’ve only tried it the traditional way so far, but I’m sure the rest of the menu is just as good. 💰 Price range: From IDR 25K ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 8am-10pm 📍 Address: Jl. Raya Babakan Canggu No.27, Kec. Kuta Utara, Badung, Bali Image credit: Happy Pork Rendang Instagram So, what do you think? Is Bali expensive? It really depends on how you choose to experience it. Here are just a few of my regular places around Canggu - and of course, the list will continue. What I like about living in Bali (or in Indonesia in general) is that it doesn’t force you into one way of living. You can keep it ultra-local with a 20K plate of rice from a humble warung, or go for the fancy options - both are valid ways to enjoy the island. Thank you for reading!

10 Aesthetic Canggu Cafes and Restaurants Image

10 Aesthetic Canggu Cafes and Restaurants

Aesthetic Canggu Cafes and Restaurants I don’t pick a cafe or restaurant just because it’s cute - but I’ll admit, when a place has a nice interior and a comfortable space, I’m way more tempted to check it out. People these days call it “Instagrammable” (not really a word I love using), but for me it’s less about the photos and more about how genuinely happy I feel sitting in a space that looks and feels good. Canggu definitely has plenty of that aesthetic energy, but I’ve also made sure to pick spots that I actually enjoyed eating at - not just looking at. Anyway, if hunting down aesthetic Canggu cafes and restaurants is on your Bali itinerary, I hope this little list leads you to a few places you’ll like as much as I did. The whole place has this rustic, earthy vibe with natural materials and a cosy feel. The menu follows the same mindful approach, with Japanese-inspired dishes, healthy salads, as well as other comfort meals like cheeseburger and the classic eggs Benedict for breakfast. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 9am-8pm 📍 Google Map: Bokashi Berawa Image credit: Bokashi Instagram Arti Salad Bar With its unique cave-inspired design and a touch of greenery, this cafe feels like a hidden garden escape right on the main road. The space is beautifully designed while still being practical for those looking to work. The winning point is that there are plenty of power outlets at almost every table. Beyond the aesthetics, they also serve great coffee alongside fresh and nutritious meals from breakfast to dinner. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 7am-8pm 📍 Google Map: Arti Salad Bar Bread Basket The name pretty much gives it away - Bread Basket is where you go for freshly baked bread, sourdough, bagels, and coffee. But their breakfast menu is also worth checking out. Add in the warm interiors and cosy corners, and you have the perfect excuse to slow down and stay awhile. They also have branches in Sanur and Kerobokan. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 7am-5pm 📍 Google Map: Bread Basket Canggu Image credit: Bread Basket Canggu Google Page You may also like this article: My Little Canggu Restaurant List - Part 2 Woods Pererenan Walking into Woods Pererenan feels a little like a treehouse. The restaurant was designed around the existing trees, so you’ll see actual trees as part of the space. The highlight for me is their Sunday Roast, a weekly treat that invites you to spend your Sunday the way it should be: slow, unhurried, and with good food. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 8am-11pm 📍 Google Map: Woods Pererenan Image credit: Woods Pererenan Instagram Penny Lane This place is popular for a reason- giant archways, textured walls, vintage-inspired furniture, earthy tones, and sunlight hitting every corner perfectly during golden hour. It feels like a botanical wonderland - a place for gathering or special occasions. They also have quite an extensive menu, from classic breakfast dishes and burgers to steak and Indonesian favourites. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 8am-12am 📍 Google Map: Penny Lane Image credit: Penny Lane Instagram THE COLOURFUL ONES Studio Pepe This new addition to Canggu’s dining scene will lure you in with its super cute exterior - it almost doesn’t feel like you’re in Bali. But once you step inside, the vibe shifts completely. It’s a smart dining kind of place, serving a proper Italian menu from antipasti and pizza to pasta and, of course, dessert. The highlights for us were the chicken al mattone and linguine al limone. So yes, this place is not just pretty - the food is genuinely delicious too. ⏰ Opening hours: Tue-Sun, 11am-11pm 📍 Google Map: Studio Pepe Monsieur Spoon The Luc I still remember when Monsieur Spoon was just a little shop in Umalas, and I’d walk there from my aunt’s villa for chocolate tartlets and plain croissants. Now they’re everywhere - not just in Bali, but in big cities all over Indonesia too. Anyway, among all their branches, I find the one at The Luc Canggu especially cute and comfy. They also have a proper dining menu here, so it’s not just pastries and cakes. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 7am-10pm 📍 Google Map: Monsieur Spoon The Luc Image credit: Monsieur Spoon The Luc Google Page You may also like this article: Breakfast Spots in Canggu Worth Waking Up Early For Mara This one is a little further out, technically not in Canggu, but close enough and it's worth mentioning. And if you haven’t explored the Tumbak Bayuh area yet, now’s a good time. It’s much quieter than central Canggu, with plenty of hidden gems like this spot, Mara. It instantly catches your eye the moment you walk in, with bold colours and a fun, playful vibe. The menu isn’t too extensive, but it has everything you need for a good, easy lunch. There’s also a little corner with cute merchandise you can browse while you’re there. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sat, 7.30am-6.30pm 📍 Google Map: Mara Mata Warung, but make it cool. The space is huge and full of personality. You’ll be greeted by super cool murals that kind of set the whole vibe from the moment you walk in. There’s a little shop right at the entrance, a vinyl room tucked at the back, and a lush garden space that’s perfect for private events. Don’t expect traditional warung prices here, though - it’s more of a proper restaurant experience dressed in warung concept (they have a la carte menu too). Familiar flavours, but elevated in a way that’s still approachable and fun. ⏰ Opening hours: Sun-Thu 10am-10pm, Fri-Sat 10am-2am 📍 Google Map: Mata Berawa Image credit: Mata Berawa Instagram Brother Goose Sitting right next to The Garden Bali Kindy, it naturally carries that same playful, family-friendly energy - and of course you can expect a fun but nutritious kids’ menu here. The space is colourful and cheerful, not just in the interiors but also in the menu, haha! Think vibrant smoothies, green pesto omelette, and French toast with berries. ⏰ Opening hours: Mon-Sun, 7am-4pm 📍 Google Map: Brother Goose Image credit: Brother Goose Instagram At the end of the day, it’s not really about “Instagrammable” spots, but places that make you feel good when you’re in them. Somewhere you don’t rush through, somewhere you actually sit, eat, talk, and just be. Hope you find this list useful and thank you for reading!
