The good old Legian never dies.

I spent so much of my childhood in this neighbourhood that walking back through it now feels a bit like flipping through an old photo album; familiar corners, same vibe, and that nice feeling that not everything has changed. It’s comforting, in a way, to see some of the same restaurants still around – quietly standing the test of time.

And if you know, you know…some places, they evolve, but never lose their charm. Not trying too hard, not chasing trends – just naturally keeping up, staying relevant in their own way, while holding on to what made people fall in love with them in the first place. One of them is SKAI Bar & Grill, formerly known as SKAI Beach Club. And yes, as the name suggests, the concept’s had a bit of a glow-up.

The heart of it never goes anywhere

Don’t worry though, the iconic beachfront pool and those outdoor seats we all love are still very much there (I know, some memories are just too good to let go of). It still carries that same laid-back, by-the-sea energy that made it such a favourite in the first place. But now, there’s a cosy indoor extension with 34 seats – perfect if you’re into that open-flame, grill-side kind of experience that SKAI Bar & Grill is leaning into.

There’s also a new terrace that low-key feels like a secret garden – very much an evolution of the OG SKAI vibe. Think floor-to-ceiling windows, lush greenery everywhere, and laser-cut screens that look dreamy during golden hour (warm, dappled light kind of situation). The seating is all hand-woven in soft driftwood greys and sandy taupes, tying everything back to the natural beachy colour palette (my bright pink outfit would really pop here! hehe). So yeah, anyway – new space, same soul.

Open Flame, Bold Flavours, and Signature Cuts

Now onto the food – because this is the even more interesting part. Picture all that calming seaside ambience paired with their heroes on the menu; tender cuts with za’atar, citrusy sumac, a touch of smoky paprika. Simple, but so good. Add in the sea breeze, some greenery, and soft lantern light overhead… it’s seaside dining, in Bali, but with a slice of Eastern Mediterranean twist.

At the heart of it all is an open kitchen. You get to watch the chefs fully in their element, working the fire and charcoal. There’s something quite satisfying about seeing it all happen right in front of you.

This is where SKAI’s signature cuts come in; Angus tenderloin, grass-fed MB3+, pork chop Pata Negra Ibérico, and more. And if you’re someone who likes to choose your cut properly, you’ll appreciate this: the dry-aging chamber is now on display too, beautifully laid out on rustic maple boards. Take your time, have a look, and pick exactly what you’re in the mood for.

All in all, SKAI Bar & Grill, and this new expansion, is such a lovely addition to Legian’s dining scene. It’s one of those spots that feels familiar, but in the best, refreshed kind of way – like coming back to something you love, but better than you remember. And the fact that it’s located at Padma Resort Legian, a resort that holds so many beautiful memories for me, just makes it even more special to me! 🫶🏻✨

Vegan Cafes in Canggu I’m not vegan, but when I really think about it, the Indonesian diet is actually heavily plant-based. I grew up eating tempe, tofu, steamed mushrooms, stir-fried vegetables, and vegetable soups without ever thinking of them as “vegan food” - they were just normal everyday meals at home. Meat was often more of a side dish or something for special occasions, while vegetables, soy-based proteins, rice, and simple home cooking were the real foundation of the diet. In my family, at least. So now that I’m an adult with free will and access to basically any food I want, I still naturally enjoy vegetables every now and then. My parents eat almost entirely plant-based these days too, so I guess I still follow that rhythm - and living in Canggu definitely makes it easy, because vegan options are everywhere. Here’s a mix of places I’ve personally tried myself, plus a few recommendations from my friends too. Ps. “Dua Hati” means “two hearts,” so I’m guessing that’s why the rice is heart-shaped, hehe. 📍 Jl. Oma Jamu has a warung-style display with ready-made dishes, which is perfect if you arrive starving and want to eat straight away. And from the name “Oma Jamu,” you can expect that they also have a great selection of homemade jamu (Indonesian traditional herbal drinks). 📍 Jl. Best Coffee Shops in Canggu, Umalas, and Nearby Areas I’m not a coffee connoisseur, just a regular girl who needs her daily caffeine fix to survive the chaos of life. So don’t expect a deep dive into brewing methods, tasting notes, or where the beans are grown here. Instead, I’m simply sharing my go-to coffee spots near where I live in Bali, mostly Canggu, Umalas and the surrounding areas. This is also not a list of "The Most Instagrammable cafes" (though they are pretty cute); some are small, humble, and just….nice. So, if you're looking for great coffee without the fluff - let’s get into it. So baristas, if you’re reading this, please don’t hate me, but I like my Piccolo ice cold. And Satu Satu is one of the few places that gets the balance of coffee, milk, and ice just right. It’s never watered down, but also not too intense. I often buy their ground coffee as presents for friends and family. It’s roughly the same distance from where I live to either one. The space is nice for a quiet hangout with friends or a quick work-from-cafe session. If you get hungry in the middle of replying emails, they’ve got a tempting selection of pastries for cakes, plus a main menu if you’re ready for something more filling. Ps. And unlike the old days, parking is no longer a challenge - there's a whole basement parking area for both scooters and cars. You really can't skip this one when you're in Bali. The space is big, stylish, and easy to spend a few hours in. And after all these years, Revolver is still one of my favourite places to go for a good coffee fix. 📍Jl. That’s exactly why I like it; I’m not a fan of crowded cafes, especially when you have to wait in line. The coffee here is nice, and they’re known for their healthy menu (but not too hardcore healthy, if you know what I mean). 📍 Jl. Bumbak Dauh No.89x, Kerobokan, Kec. Arnold’s Coffee may be small, but it’s full of charm, and it has everything you need to start your morning right. My family loves this place; we often end up staying a while, especially with the board games they have available. The coffee is nice, and you should definitely try the waffles. Best of all, the prices are affordable (I mean, things are generally cheaper once you’re outside central Canggu). 📍 Jl. Raya Semer no. 34, Kerobokan, Kec. Not far from 7AM Bakers in Bumbak, you'll find a small entrance tucked away on the corner that leads to TGC. It's easy to miss, but definitely worth seeking out. I like sitting outside, but the upstairs space looks like it'd be perfect for a work-from-cafe day. 📍 Jl. Bumbak Dauh, Kerobokan, Kec.
